TEACHER OF HISTORY (FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME ROLES

CONSIDERED)

FOR SEPTEMBER 2024

Are you looking for a teaching role, where you can devote time to educating international students with the highest aspirations? Our student body is diverse, inspiring and ever-growing in number. Consequently, an exciting opportunity has arisen to teach History within the Humanities department at the Worthgate School. The Humanities department offers a broad range of subjects within a variety of programmes of Study: GCSE, PRE, A-level, IB Diploma and University Foundation programmes. Subject disciplines include History, Geography, Environmental Systems and Societies, Sociology, Psychology, Global Politics, International Relations.

As a teacher, this is a fantastic and truly unique environment in which to work. Class sizes are small, and students are motivated to learn and ultimately progress to excellent universities. Hence applicants who particularly relish teaching at A-level standard will find the Worthgate School hugely enjoyable and fulfilling.

The Humanities disciplines are very popular subjects with our students, who also often apply to related university courses, both nationally and internationally. Consequently, we are not only looking for a teacher who can harness the international contexts of our classrooms and offer an inclusive environment for students

to engage in dialogue and develop their academic skills, but also someone who can drive engaging co-curricular opportunities for our students and staff. We expect teachers to be involved in our super-curricular activities, which we call “Electives”, where currently members of the faculty offer MUN, EPQ, Philosophy and

Psychology Societies. Department members also deliver other super-curricular programmes such as Classics and History of Ideas.

Applicants should also evidence a commitment to their professional development. There are excellent, funded opportunities at Worthgate for successful applicants to undertake the NPQ qualifications (Leading Teaching, Senior Leadership and Headship) with us in partnership with UCL, and multiple teachers enrol on these NPQ programmes each year. Since we belong to a wider group of schools (CATS Global Schools), the academic team benefit from cross-school collaborations and events. Staff are encouraged to identify and contribute to such professional relationships.

For September 2024 we are looking for a person who has:

• Subject specialism in History, with a degree in a related discipline;

• A critical understanding of developments in the relevant subject and curriculum areas;

o Knowledge of the IBDP History curriculum would be an advantage, although training can be provided;

o Ability to teach additional Humanities’ subjects (e.g. Sociology or Psychology) would be an advantage;

• Enthusiasm to identify and embrace extra- and co-curricular opportunities to enrich our student experience (knowledge of running Mock Trials would be an advantage);

• An ability to promote high standards of literacy and articulacy in the English language;

• Responsive teaching strategies that incorporate high quality feedback and a focus on literacy;

• A proven record of excellent, reflective, and inspiring classroom practice;

• Responsive teaching strategies that incorporate high-quality feedback;

• Enthusiasm for continued professional learning;

• Interest in, and knowledge of, national and international current affairs related to the Humanities’ disciplines;

• Commitment to ensuring our students have an enriched, holistic boarding school experience.

This role would be suitable for experienced teachers, although applications from ambitious new professionals will be welcomed and considered. Hence we also welcome applications from ECTs and individuals wishing to pursue the apprenticeship route into teaching via our ITE collaboration with the University of Buckingham.

Closing date for applications and interview:

Closing date: Monday 7th May 2024, 12 noon

Interview: Expected to take place week commencing May 13th 2024. However, we reserve the right to process any applications as they are received, and therefore interviews may be scheduled earlier than the above date.

The Worthgate School offers an outstanding international pre-university educational experience to students aged 14+ from all over the world. Students live and study onsite in the heart of the city of Canterbury, studying for GCSEs, A levels, IB and University Foundation Programmes, and preparing for admission to universities across the country and elsewhere. We pride ourselves on our approach to teaching and learning, with small class sizes and an informal atmosphere ensuring that students are treated as individuals and build great relationships with staff.

We take student welfare very seriously, providing comfortable, safe and secure en-suite boarding accommodation. Our friendly house staff provide a home from home, looking after our students whilst encouraging them to become confident and independent.
