Job overview

Full Time • Required for September 2022

Welcome to Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, where we are proud of our heritage as we approach our 400th birthday and excited to be inspiring and empowering the aspirations of our students today. A state funded school in the centre of Marlow, Borlase is recognised for excellent academic learning and an outstanding extra and super curricular programme.

The Department

The History Department at Borlase is an exciting place to teach and learn. History is very popular at KS3 and as a GCSE option. At A level, History has several sets each year. Government and Politics is also a popular A level choice and the ability to teach this subject, or the desire to develop the skills, would be advantageous.

The quality of teaching is outstanding, as are the many additional staff and student led wider opportunities.

History is a compulsory subject in Years 7 and 8 with five classes of 30 pupils in each year group Focusing on developing a love of History as well as key historical skills, the KS 3 curriculum is a broad chronology covering a wide period from the Romans to WW 2. Learning is extended beyond the classroom by cross curricular projects and by a wide range of trips and visits, including a whole year trip to the Battlefields of northern France in the summer of Year 8.

The GCSE course runs over three years covering Years 9,10 and 11. History is a very popular option with about 90-100 of the 150 pupils choosing to study it each year. We follow the AQA History GCSE specification, covering Germany 1890-1945, Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-72, Health and the people c.1000 to the present day, and Elizabethan England. In Year 10 we offer a trip to Berlin for GCSE History students.

A level History is also a popular option with over 40 students in the current year 12 taught in 3 groups.  We follow the AQA specification, teaching the Tudors England, 1485-1603 and Revolution and Dictatorship: Russia, 1917 1953. Coursework is completed on Civil Rights in the USA. The History department achieves outstanding results at A level, with 88 of students achieving A* -B in 2019. The vast majority of our students go on to university, with most going to Russell Group or Oxbridge institutions.  Sixth form students lead the school’s History Society

Government and Politics is taught only at A level, but is becoming increasingly popular. We follow the Edexcel specification covering both UK and US politics. There are two Politics classes in both Y 12 and Y 13 typically with about 16 students in each and, as with History, the students also run a thriving Politics society. In Year 13 we also offer a combined History/Politics/Economics trip to New York and Washington.

Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School is committed to being an inspirational learning environment for students and staff, empowering young people to fulfil their aspirations and ambitions; supporting them in developing the confidence to shape their own futures and in so doing, the future of the world around them.

Our values today are captured in the school motto, adopted by those early scholars back in 1624. Te Digna Sequere - Follow things Worthy - is a principle that underpins the distinctive ethos of the school. It reminds us all that we should have a clear moral purpose behind the choices we make; that we should value all individuals within a supportive community and that we have the potential to use our different talents to make a positive difference at Borlase and beyond.

The Borlase Curriculum provides a breadth and depth of academic learning and cultural experience to excite and extend all our students. It is rich in knowledge and in opportunities to develop creativity, instilling a life-long enthusiasm for learning. Our curriculum is delivered by passionate, specialist teachers who encourage aspiration, intellectual curiosity and the exploration of their subject disciplines inside and beyond the classroom, as independent thinkers and learners. It includes a broad range of super and extra-curricular opportunities which ignite and extend students' interests, enthusiasm and skills across a wide range of endeavours including those linked to academic subjects, to sports, the arts, engineering, AI, public speaking, creative writing, entrepreneurism and so much more.
