Job overview

Maternity Cover Required from October half term 2017

Southam College is a popular, high performing and innovative 11-18 school at the centre of its community, closely located to Coventry, Leamington, Banbury and Leicestershire. We are currently seeking to appoint an inspirational Teacher of History to cover a period of maternity leave from 30th October 2017.

At our school we value all our staff and every one of our 1644 students and see the investment in our staff as crucial as we look to build on previous successes for our students and across the school. As a large school there are extensive opportunities to teach throughout all Key Stages including Sixth Form (we currently have 298 students in our Sixth Form). We have an exemplary induction programme which provides an excellent foundation for career progression.

The successful applicant will be an inspirational forward thinker with a focus on developing exciting and engaging learning experiences and a belief in our ‘can do’ culture where anything is possible. You will be a talented teacher, with excellent subject knowledge and be well informed on current educational developments and initiatives, working in an outstanding department (87% A*-C Grades - summer 2016). Passion is at the heart of our practice and it is essential that you have the ability to enthuse and motivate those around you. Be the best you can be!

It is a particularly exciting time to join us as we have recently become part of the newly formed Stowe Valley MAT, which is led by Southam College. This exciting development has further enhanced our ability to offer inspirational and supportive leadership and CPD for all of our staff.

In 2014 we were rated as ‘outstanding’ for the second time by Ofsted and in 2016 we achieved 83% A*-C in English and Maths. We are determined to build on this success by continuing to:

  • raise achievement and attainment at all levels
  • develop our collective Learning and Teaching skills
  • enhance the range of Memorable Experiences enjoyed by our students and staff

If you are:

  • passionate about your subject
  • keen to teach motivated and enthusiastic students
  • really want to make a difference to the lives of young people

then this might be just the job for you!

Please contact Mike Sherwin on the below details for further information and an application form.

Closing Date: Midday Tuesday 26th September 2017

Values and vision

Southam College actively seeks to promote British values within an atmosphere of respect, tolerance and the celebration of difference. Students are encouraged to develop moral skills and an awareness of philosophical questioning.

The secondary school’s Life Skills curriculum focuses on parliamentary democracy, in order to develop an understanding of the freedoms afforded to citizens of a democracy and the consequences of an undemocratic society.

Students’ appreciation of democracy is further enhanced by the fact that they have the opportunity to be elected to an active student council. They are also taught about democracy during year-group assemblies.

Ofsted report

“Teachers plan lessons which are at the right level of difficulty for students and which result in all students making excellent progress. Students receive effective feedback from teachers which helps them to improve their work very well. Students feel safe at the school and they have a strong understanding of safety matters. The headteacher has high expectations of all staff and students. These expectations are shared by all leaders. Consequently, students have appropriately high expectations of themselves.”
