Job overview

Full-time Teacher of History

Salary: Competitive Dependant on Experience

The History Department at Denstone currently comprises three members of staff, including the Head of Department. It is well resourced, with a devoted department teaching area including Smartboards in each classroom.

In First to Third Form (Year 7-9), we combine a chronological course of key events in British History with other European and world events. Medieval England is the focus in the First Form, from the Norman Conquest up to the Wars of the Roses. In Second Form, we look at the Tudors and Stuarts, the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution, while Third Form pupils study the two World Wars, the rise of Hitler and the Holocaust and Apartheid in South Africa. We aim to engender a love of the subject along with embedding some essential skills.

At GCSE we follow the Edexcel specification. This involves units on the Cold War, Elizabeth I, Medicine Through Time, and Weimar and Nazi Germany. At A Level we follow the OCR specification, opting for Russia 1894-1941, The Early Tudors and Civil Rights in the USA.

External exam results are strong and have improved significantly in recent years. 78% of pupils achieved B grades or better at A Level in 2022, with 41% of pupils achieving a grade 7 or better at GCSE. The department has a strong record of preparing pupils for degrees at top universities including Oxbridge.

The department has also expanded in recent years and has consistently been amongst the most popular options subject at GCSE over the past few years, with two sets currently studying the subject in both Fourth and Fifth Form. The department is active in organising enrichment trips and workshops, with recent visits including Warwick Castle for the First Form and a Fifth and Sixth Form trip to Berlin and Krakow.

The successful applicant should be a resourceful and enthusiastic teacher, with a genuine love of the subject and a clear vision for its future in an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing world.

Denstone College has made significant strides in recent years, with expanding pupil numbers and a developing reputation for achievement in academic and other areas. This was confirmed by the most recent ISI inspection (November 2017) which judged the school to be “excellent” in terms of the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements and also pupils’ personal development. In September 2021 the College welcomed its own Prep division onsite, educating pupils from 4-11 years old.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach up to 27 periods per week (with each period 40 minutes in duration). All full-time teachers at Denstone also act as tutors within the College’s thriving House system and are expected to contribute fully to the rich and diverse programme of activities and Sport enjoyed by pupils across all year groups. Life at Denstone can be very full but also immensely rewarding!
