Job overview

The Oriel History Department

INNOVATIVE, MOTIVATED AND SUCCESSFUL

The Oriel History & Ancient History team currently consists of 3 full-time teachers. There are three full-size History classrooms all with interactive whiteboard, projector and a personal work laptop provided for each member of teaching staff, along with a dedicated Humanities Resource Room which offers a communal workspace for Humanities Faculty teachers. Additionally smaller seminar rooms are available for Sixth Form lessons.

The History teachers at Oriel aim to provide every student with the wide-range chronological knowledge and disciplinary skills that allow them successful progression as young and passionate historians. History is very popular, both in uptake at GCSE and at A-Level study and delivers a range of Learning Outside the Classroom opportunities—including residential trips to Krakow & Auschwitz and Rome and daytrips to Hampton Court Palace, Imperial War Museum and the British Museum. We also provide Ancient History as part of our Humanities GCSEs. We also provide a unique enrichment opportunity of ‘Oriel History Day’ which celebrates the outstanding and creative projects generated by our KS3 history students annually.

Our History curriculum has a broad range of Ancient, Early Modern and Modern topics—which provide dedicated enquiries to understanding British and Global histories. Oriel History and Ancient History teachers fully support guided practice in writing at high-levels, and promote the skills for sustained independent practice for our students to succeed whatever key stage at Oriel.

We are looking to appoint someone who…...

• Is knowledgeable and passionate about all aspects of History, who is motivated to support students in achieving their full potential and who wants to join a committed and passionate team of Historians.

• Will lead in providing first-class teaching and learning for our students; as well as being an excellent collaborator to drive the knowledge agenda and pedagogy within the department.

• Has experience of teaching History across KS3 and KS4.

• Is willing to support the department in delivering extra-curricular opportunities, and study-support sessions guiding students with their on-going learning at GCSE.

We have excellent support for ECTs and would welcome applications from newly qualified teachers who would like to grow and develop in an innovative and forward thinking department; or more experienced teachers. Oriel has a detailed ECT training package praised by West Sussex and actively encourages CPD throughout the school with a comprehensive program for teachers at all stages of their careers.
