Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Junior School is an all-boys, non-denominational, independent junior school, located in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The school has approximately 375 pupils, ranging from 4 to 11 years of age. The school first opened in 1591 as a grammar school, becoming a separate junior school in 1910. It is part of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, along with three other junior and senior schools, plus a nursery.

In 2011, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Junior School opened a pre-preparatory department, Centenary House, which resulted in the previous age range of 7-11 being lowered. The school has specialist facilities across many subject areas and is closely linked with Wakefield Cathedral.

Views and vision

The junior school aims to promote moral values and instil a sense of community. Children are taught to respect others regardless of their gender, background or ethnicity. It provides a wide range of "boy-centred" opportunities for children during their time at the school, which help them to feel passionate and excited about learning.

The school offers a variety of teaching and learning styles to cater for all pupils, along with organising extra-curricular activities to ignite new interests and nurture talent.

ISI report

“All pupils display high levels of personal development. They are confident and self-aware, and demonstrate a strong moral compass. Pupils take their social responsibilities seriously and contribute effectively to the life of their school and to the world beyond. They have a strong cultural awareness and show a natural respect and tolerance towards those from different religious and cultural backgrounds”.
