About the Academy

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to be part of a team delivering our Key Stage 3 competency-based curriculum at a brand-new academy, with the potential to shape your career with us as the academy grows. This role is suitable for both primary- and secondary-trained colleagues.

Shireland CBSO Academy is an exciting new school that opened to Year 7 in September 2023 and is the first state school in the country to be established in partnership with a professional orchestra. Based in Providence Place, West Bromwich, the Academy works in partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and serves all of Sandwell and the wider West Midlands. In 2024-25, we will have our first Year 8 cohort and we are also looking to grow our Sixth Form.

Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust is a recognised leader in education and was founded by three-times Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ Shireland Collegiate Academy: Our students will study a full, broad and balanced curriculum, seen through the lens of music. In Year 7, we follow the ‘Literacy for Life’ model developed by our Trust over the last 15 years: Students learn via a thematic approach to their studies, spending 17 hours a week with the same teacher, enabling them to smoothly transition from primary to secondary school. Students continue to study Literacy for Life for 13 hours in Year 8 and 5 hours in Year 9. Each teacher is focused on the students in their Literacy for Life class, not just from an academic perspective but also getting to know the students and their families and forming a partnership which will really help students to make progress.

Literacy for Life

Literacy for Life is a thematic curriculum taught for 17 hours each week in Year 7, 13 hours in Year 8 and 5 hours in Year 9. Each teacher is focused on the students in their Literacy for Life class, not just from an academic perspective but also getting to know the students and their families and forming a partnership which will really help students to make progress.

Our Year 7 programme will be accommodated in a bespoke technologically rich, new build environment.

We are seeking inspirational teachers from either secondary or Upper Key Stage 2.

Applicants will:

  • Be passionate about improving the lives of students they serve
  • Be confident in teaching across subjects
  • Role model a commitment to excellence
  • Be confident in using pedagogies for thematic/project-based learning
  • Want to collaborate as part of a team
  • Believe they have both a pastoral and academic responsibility
  • Be flexible and adaptable, rising to the challenge of creating a new Academy
  • Have high standards for students and themselves.

In return we will offer:

  • Excellent career development opportunities and access to a comprehensive programme of CPD
  • An extensive support programme for ECTs
  • An ICT-rich environment which allows staff to be innovative in harnessing technology for learning
  • The opportunity to be involved in the opening of a new Academy
  • Employee Health and Wellbeing Package

The Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.
