Job overview

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in joining our teaching team at The Island Free School.

The Island Free School is an extremely successful and popular secondary school. Our school is highly academic and all pupils follow the English Baccalaureate, with GCSE programmes of study in all subject areas. The school, which was created by parents and teachers, opened to year 7 pupils in 2014 and we are now at capacity. Our model has proved very popular with Island families and we are heavily over-subscribed in all year groups.

Since opening, we have built a highly effective team of teachers and support staff with a shared passion to create an extraordinary school for Island families. We have been rated Good with Outstanding personal development, behaviour and welfare by Ofsted in our first inspection in June 2017 and we encourage you to read our Ofsted report.

Our school has a specialism in music and all pupils are given free music tuition and instruments in key stage 3. At the end of each day all pupils and staff engage in a wide range of creative, academic and sporting activities as part of our enrichment programme.

We seek to appoint an enthusiastic practitioner in Mathematics – the potential to teach some Science as a second subject to at least Key Stage 3 would be an advantage - to join our established team. The successful candidate can expect high quality professional development, potential for career advancement, and the opportunity to enjoy coming to work each day.

To apply please use the online form – we look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your interest in our school.

The Island Free School is a mixed, non selective, non denominational secondary school (without sixth form) based in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. It is a free school supported by a single academy trust, set up by experienced teachers, parents and members of the local business community.

The school opened in 2014 in response to poor academic results on the Island and has proved popular with parents, being oversubscribed in all year groups.

The school is smaller than average offering 125 places in each year group, and reached capacity at 625 pupils in September 2018. The school has an excellent pupil to staff ratio and teachers have the opportunity to get to know every pupil.

Values and vision

We raise expectations and encourage independent thinking

· Pupils follow an academic curriculum built around the English Baccalaureate enhanced by sports, creative and community activities.

·  As a music specialist school, everyone has the opportunity to play an instrument.

·  Our pupils feel valued and proud to be part of the learning community.

·  We expect pupils to work hard and behave in an exemplary way.

·  We provide unrivalled teaching, resources and pastoral care.

·  Small class sizes give each teacher the opportunity to get to know every pupil.

· All our teachers are passionate about learning. Staff are our most valuable asset and we ensure that they feel valued and supported.

That’s why our motto is 'nulli secundus'  Latin, meaning ‘second to none’.

We are an Island school for Island families, giving parents a real choice for their child’s education.
