Applications are invited from charismatic, enthusiastic and suitably qualified teachers for this exciting, rewarding and demanding post within our Maths Team delivering across all Key-stages 3-5. We would also be interested in hearing from candidates who can offer other subjects such as Business Studies, Economics and IT/Computing but this is not essential. There are possible links with primary school so candidate with experience or an interest of working with key stage 2 would also be of interest.
Founded in the 12th century and then re-established by Henry VIII in 1542, the choir school has traditionally educated boy choristers. Bristol Cathedral Choir School is an academy with mathematics as a specialism. The school became part of the Cathedral Schools Trust (a Multi Academy Trust) in 2016. It accepts students from all over Bristol. We welcome those of all faiths and none and we are proud of our diverse, tolerant and respectful community.
The post offers an exciting opportunity to work with motivated pupils within the framework of a supportive and successful faculty. Results are consistently excellent at both GCSE and A Level and Ofsted described the behaviour of students as exemplary. BCCS is the most oversubscribed school in Bristol. The school received an overall judgement of outstanding from Ofsted in January 2016. Results at KS4 and KS 5 remain very high.
The Mathematics Department
Mathematics is one of the most successful subjects within Bristol Cathedral Choir School with regard to both uptake at A level and the external examination results, and was judged Outstanding by Ofsted.
The expansion of the Trust means that there may well be opportunities to be involved in developing mathematics across other schools.
Years Seven and Eight
The students come from a large number of different Primary Schools and thus come to the school with a wide and varying background of mathematical experience. We have a five form entry which will begin as all-ability and move to set classes in their first term. The work is centred around the Cambridge Essentials Mathematics scheme, but is supplemented with other resources and projects.
Years Nine, Ten and Eleven
Years 9, 10 and 11 have five sets, with two working towards the Higher tier of entry of the Edexcel GCSE course, one crossover set and 2 parallel foundation classes. The core text is Activeteach, but this is greatly augmented through other resources.
Year Twelve and Thirteen
We follow the AQA specification for A’ level in both Maths and Further Maths. The aim of these two years is not only to draw the best out of each student in terms of a final grade, but also to develop mathematicians who enjoy the subject and have the ability to question and think for themselves.
We currently run a Core Maths programme to Post 16 and would be happy to consider candidates with some experience in this area.
The post may suit a full time or part time (minimum 0.8) appointment.
You will be an excellent classroom practitioner with creative ideas for developing pedagogy within the department and school. You will be expected to teach at all Key Stages and therefore experience of teaching exam courses is an advantage. We would also be interested in hearing from candidates who can offer other subjects such as Business Studies, Economics and/or IT/Computing.
Teachers have a role within the pastoral system; the ability to contribute to other co-curricular areas of BCCS life will be welcomed.
