Teacher of Mathematics/Further Mathematics(IGCSE and A Level)

Shenzhen College of International Education: 

Founded in 2003, SCIE is the city’s first full-time high school (Year 10 to Year 13) teaching an international curriculum. SCIE is a highly selective day and boarding school teaching an international curriculum to Chinese students preparing them for overseas universities. Using English as the medium of instruction and communication, SCIE offers IGCSE and GCE AS and A-levels, mainly through Cambridge International. SCIE is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Accrediting Commission for Schools (ACS WASC). We are a member school of the regional organisations EARCOS and FOBISIA.

Students at SCIE aspire to attend the best overseas universities. The class of 2021 received 31 Oxbridge offers in a diverse range of subjects including Architecture and Experimental Psychology in addition to the traditional strong presence in Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Many students also go on to other universities in the Russel Group, US Ivy League and other top institutions around the world, including schools for Art and Design, Music, and Hospitality Management.

SCIE has very diversified staff who come from more than 20 countries, not only UK, New Zealand, the United States and Australia, but also Canada, Colombia, India, Ireland, South Africa and Spain. Currently, the College has over 160 full-time teachers and 70 administrative staff members. 

In August 2020, the College moved to its new purpose-built campus in Antuoshan, Shenzhen. The new site is fully equipped for the College expansion with smart classrooms, a large number of science laboratories, a 750-seat theatre, sports facilities and all that we need to facilitate the high quality teaching and learning of the College community. The top floor, with a comfortable staff lounge, gym and designated areas for meetings and CPD, is accessible to staff only. Accommodation is provided in our adjacent staff apartment building of a minimum two-bedroom furnished standard.

Antuoshan is in Futian, the CBD district of Shenzhen. The campus is within walking distance to international shops, supermarkets and restaurants. It is a stones’ throw away from the Antuo Hill subway station, giving easy and convenient access to the city’s extensive metro network.

Specific Responsibilities: 

Due to the expansion in our college, the Mathematics department will expand from its current 21 full-time teachers to about 23 teachers by 2024. Due to the calibre of our students, Mathematics is taught as standard a year in advance of normal cohorts with IGCSE Mathematics or Additional Mathematics in UK Year 10 and AS/AL Mathematics in UK Years 11 and 12. Students can then study AS/AL Further Mathematics in UK Years 12 and 13 as appropriate. The subject is highly popular throughout the school, with almost all students completing AS Mathematics and about 96% continuing to A-Level. Results are very high, with over 98% achieving A/A* at IGCSE and over 85% at A-Level. Typically, about half of the students will study Further Mathematics, with nearly two-thirds achieving A/A*. Each year, several students choose to apply to Mathematics courses in top universities in the UK and US, with a significant number taking up places in Mathematics courses at Oxbridge each year. This is facilitated with regular extension classes preparing students for the STEP. Mathematics exams each year.

We are looking for strong mathematics teachers with experience of Pure Maths, Mechanics, and Statistics at A-Level to join the team in this exciting period of development and expansion. Experience of teaching mathematics at the highest levels, particularly Further Mathematics and the ability to facilitate extension classes in Mathematics will be an advantage.  We also have the possibility of a Head of Faculty role for Mathematics and Computer Science for relevant applicants - please see separate Department Head vacancy for further details

The regular working week is Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 16:30 (early finish at 15:00 on Fridays) and the normal student contact time is 24 x 40-minute periods per week (55% contact time), in addition to class preparation. Teachers also have 6 periods of personal time fixed into their timetables when they do not need to be at work. Teaching staff at SCIE are also expected to offer one hour after school of extra-curricular activity each week. Our school year is August to mid-June with all Chinese holidays (including 1 week for October National Day and 3 weeks for Chinese New Year) plus 2 weeks Christmas holiday.

According to our published salary scale, school provided accommodation, full international medical cover (self + dependent) and annual flight allowance (self + spouse). 

Requirements: 

• A degree in your area of expertise 

• A teaching qualification (PGCE, MEd or equivalent) 

• 2 years teaching experience in the relevant area
