Job overview

The Headmaster is looking to appoint a high achieving graduate to teach Maths within a highly successful department. The timetable allocation is 0.5 FTE. The post arises due to the increasing numbers on the School roll and the continued popularity of Maths at A-Level.

The successful candidate will have an enthusiasm for Maths and be well placed to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation and achievement in all pupils.  

 The School

The King’s School, Gloucester has a rich academic tradition dating back to its founding in 1541. It houses the longest serving classroom in Europe and is held in high esteem amongst the local and wider community, winning Gloucestershire Independent School of the Year in 2020. The School strives for excellence in all areas: the academic results are strong with pupil value added being equivalent to half a grade at GCSE; there is a wide-ranging sport provision and pupils reach national levels every year; in Music, our links with Gloucester Cathedral provide an ideal location for high quality orchestral and choral music; finally, the creative arts enjoy much success with DT and Art having their own dedicated design spaces.  

The Department 

The Mathematics Department is an energetic, supportive and innovative department. The department contains four full time teachers and one part time.  

Pupils are set from early on in Year 7 and follow a scheme of work which covers the common content of the new Edexcel IGCSE and GCSE specifications before moving on to the IGCSE specific topics. The majority of pupils are entered for the Higher tier. The Schemes of Work allow for flexibility so teachers can tailor their teaching to their class, ensuring that all students make the best possible progress. Pupils in Set 1 in Year 11 are offered the opportunity to study for the Further Maths Level 2 Qualification (AQA). Mathematics is a popular choice at A-Level and amongst our select group of further mathematicians we have great success with those applying to Oxford University to study Physics or Mathematics receiving offers.

 The teaching of Mathematics occurs in five rooms, each of which has an Interactive Whiteboard or interactive TV screen and a visualiser. The Pearson textbooks are used at A-Level. For Years 7-11 there is no prescribed textbook but the teacher is free to choose one if they want to, with the Michael White books being a popular option. Classes are shared out fairly to ensure all teachers experience the full range of abilities within their timetable.

 Pupils are actively encouraged to take part in national competitions such as the UKMT Mathematics Challenges. Teams of four pupils are also chosen to represent the School in the Team Challenge events. Cross-curricular links and projects are incorporated in the Schemes of Work. The department organises an exciting range of trips, such as the residential trip to Florence to explore the mathematical discoveries of the Renaissance, and contributes to the Academic Enrichment programme; running sessions on topics such as Geodesic Domes and Chaos Theory, as well as offering a lunchtime Coding Club.

 The post could suit an NQT or experienced teacher alike who desires to teach a range of abilities in a school with exceedingly well-behaved students in small classes, ranging from 6 pupils up to a maximum of 18. 

Timetable, induction and training

The School operates to a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle.  Newly qualified teachers receive a 7 period remission in their first year for training and induction. 

Experienced applicants without formal teaching qualifications will be considered for this position.  The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level.  King’s supports unqualified teachers in achieving Qualified Teacher Status and the HMC Teacher Training Post Graduate Certificate of Education qualification whilst working at the School, and the School is fully accredited to participate in the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel NQT Programme. NQTs are provided with a comprehensive induction and mentoring programme which supports them in achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  For applicants without a teaching qualification, we are looking for a high level of subject knowledge, enthusiasm, good communication skills, patience, an empathy with young people and a desire to get involved in the extra-curricular life of the School.

• Willing to undertake further professional development

• Strong people skills, including a personal warmth and good humour

Desirable

• Further post-graduate qualifications relating to Maths

• Experience of teaching at KS3-5

• PGCE / QTS
