Job overview

Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 13 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.

Lasswade High School is the largest secondary school in Midlothian with a roll of approximately 1400 students and growing. The school's catchment area covers the towns of Bonnyrigg, Loanhead, Rosewell and surrounding villages. The school also receives several placing requests as a result of its strong reputation from within and beyond Midlothian. Lasswade has a strong record as a school and provides a wide range of opportunities for learners.

The brand new Scottish Futures Trust £37m Lasswade High School incorporates a new community hub with library, leisure centre, nursery, computer hub, conference suite, swimming pool and state of the art sports facilities. Phase 2, completion of external works, will see a new multi-use games area comprising grass and all-weather football, hockey and rugby pitches and completion of extensive car parking.

The school has over 90 classrooms and high quality facilities. The school has very close and successful working relationships and transition arrangements with its cluster primary schools and nurseries; the quality of this joint working has been recognised by Education Scotland who also highlighted strong community partnerships.

The High School has a School Leadership Team consisting of a Headmaster and four Depute Headteachers. The school presently has seven House Pastoral Principal Teachers. There are over 130 teaching and support staff in 12 Curriculum Area Departments. Each Curriculum Area benefits from its own Principal Teacher leading curriculum development, teaching & learning developments, attainment & achievement initiatives and supporting positive behaviour. The school benefits from highly successful Additional Support Needs staffing and resources, including a Principal Teacher of Support for Learning, Department Teachers and experienced Learning Assistants all positively recognised and highly praised by HMIe Education Scotland. Teachers are very well supported by a highly trained team of Administrative Staff and Technicians.

There is no substitute for experiencing the ethos of Lasswade High School and we look forward to welcoming you to our school.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic professionals who have the vision and energy to sustain and promote the current standards of achievement and ensure the continued development and progress of the school.

Interviews for the above post will take place week commencing 14 November 2016

Midlothian Council

Less than 10 miles south of Edinburgh city centre and with a population of around 80,000 people, Midlothian is a county of contrasts - steeped in history with its diverse historical buildings and picturesque mining villages, yet attracting new developments, both residential and commercial. It is bordered by Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. The day-to-day management of the council and its services is carried out by Council staff overseen by our Chief Executive, Kenneth Lawrie, and management team.

We invite applications from senior leaders who would like to join us in making a positive contribution to our goal of raising achievement, attainment and participation for all young people. In return we offer you the opportunity to develop your career as a Head Teacher in Midlothian. You will be involved in Self-Improving Schools partnerships, innovative learning communities, development of Visible Learning approaches and have the opportunity to drive developments at school, sector and authority level.

Midlothian is one of the fastest growing councils in Scotland and is rightly proud of its thriving school community with 2 nursery schools, 30 primary schools, 6 secondary schools and 1 school dedicated to supporting young people with additional support needs. Within our schools, staff work with pupils with a range of needs and abilities, and schools vary from large to small and rural to urban. Many of them have been replaced or upgraded as part of our exciting and ongoing programme of improvement of the school estate.

We actively encourage applications from senior leaders with a proven track record in school improvement and raising attainment. Applicants will hold a leadership post in the relevant sector, will be able to evidence significant improvements in outcomes for learners and will be driven in terms of quality leadership and positive outcomes for young people.

If you are eager to join a progressive Council that strives for real and sustained quality improvement as part of an ambitious and committed staff community, and be offered significant opportunities for career long professional development as a senior leader, we want to hear from you.
