Job overview

We are looking for a talented, hard-working and motivated individual to join us as a teacher of mathematics.

Caldicot School is an 11-18 co-educational comprehensive serving the local and wider community. The school has over 1300 students and is situated between Chepstow and Newport, with easy access via the M4 corridor and on the northern side of the Severn Estuary.

The school is at an exciting stage in its history. In September 2017, the school moved to a new £36m purpose-built site and now boasts some of the finest facilities in the country. Over the last two and a half years, there has been a significant number of changes at the school which has supported rapid improvements in provision and outcomes. This includes a new staffing structure, with clear career progression routes for staff, as well as a refined curriculum, designed to strengthen knowledge, understanding and skills. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking school. Our students take part in a broad range of activities that help them become "well-rounded" and the school's commitment to a values-driven education helps shape students to become positive role models in our society.

About the role

As a core subject, all students follow mathematics up to and including GCSE level. In recent years, the school accepts that performance in mathematics has been variable. At key stage 4, outcomes have been broadly in line or slightly below modelled expectations during this period. However, during the last academic year the team has made huge strides to address this. By January 2020, more than 60% of students had already achieved a good GCSE in the subject, which laid the foundation for very strong outcomes by the end of the year. At key stage 5 performance against ALPs has been very strong over a sustained period of time. The mathematics team consists of eleven very capable and hard-working specialist teachers who have a broad range of experiences. A new head of department joined the school in September 2019 and our new Assistant Head, responsible for teaching, who joined in January 2020 is also a mathematician. A further teacher joined as a learning coach in September 2020. Therefore, while there is recognition that student performance, particularly at GCSE, could be slightly stronger, we are entirely confident that we have a team of very capable teachers to deliver these ambitions.

The department is situated over two floors in a designated area of the school. Each classroom is fully equipped with the interactive technology, including classroom visualizers; interactive whiteboards and all teaching staff are issued with a laptop computer. We believe the role would suit a newly qualified teacher looking for their first teaching post or someone with more experience looking for a new school context. All new members of staff receive a very strong programme of induction and support throughout the year.

Closing date for applications: 9th December at 12 noon.

Caldicot is an 11-18 co-education school with over 1300 students in Monmouthshire. We are located between Chepstow and Newport and the school is easily accessible via the M4 corridor and on the northern side of the Severn Estuary.

Founded in the late 1950s, Caldicot School has provided an education to families from within the town and surrounding areas for more than sixty years. In 2017, the school relocated to a brand new site and now boast some of the finest educational facilities in the country.

Our vision, ethos and core purpose clearly shapes our behaviours and actions in supporting each member of our community as summarised below

Caldicot School is committed to achievement for all students through the promotion of excellence. We respect the rights of all individuals and aim to ensure all our students acquire the skills in readiness for adulthood.

We seek to ensure all our students are happy and safe; achieve their full potential; develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to take their place as responsible citizens in society. Our vision is to inspire students to value education as a life-long experience which will continue into the world of work and leisure.

At Caldicot, we promote the core values of honesty; tolerance; respect; and responsibility. This seeks to encourage students and staff to respect others within the school, our local community and wider society.

In June 2019, Caldioct entered a unique formal partnership with The Bishop of Llandaff, in Cardiff. An Executive Headteacher oversees progress, provision and leadership across both schools, while a Head of School is responsible for the day-to-day management of each institution. As a partnership of two schools, staff have access to the highest quality training and development to support student achievement and progress.
