Job overview

Post:  Teacher of Mathematics

MPS/UPS suitable for NQT

PURPOSE:

• Candidates must be able to teach across the ability and age range, supporting the development of Mathematics to the highest standards for all pupils at Key Stages 3 and 4.

• To contribute to the continuous improvement of this very successful department.

• To promote and adhere to the School’s values and be passionate about enabling students to develop a love of mathematics.

DIMENSIONS:

Darland High School is an English-medium secondary school in North East Wrexham. In September 2019 Joanne Lee was appointed as Headteacher. Since this time the school has been undergoing significant system change in many areas, and developing a strong culture of collegiate support and constant improvement. We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with pupils to help them succeed. The ability to inspire others within a creative environment is essential.

The mathematics faculty at Darland offers an opportunity for ideas to be developed and tried in a supportive environment. We are a pupil-centred faculty: here to make a positive difference to them and for them. To this end, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, and know they will always be helped when they knock on the door outside of regular class time. We aim to support the mathematical growth of our pupils whilst pushing them to their limits, showing them both what the subject can do and what they are able to achieve themselves.

No one should be afraid of maths, and no one should accept the phrase, “I just can’t do maths.” We aim to get all pupils, regardless of ability, to realise that they can make progress and they can achieve high standards. For some, this will be the C grade they need to get onto their desired college course. For others it means exploring more advanced and abstract concepts of the subject, whetting their appetites for more.

Our schemes of work allow for flexibility in teaching and learning. There are limits of time, but if pupils are working well in a topic it can be explored more deeply. Similar discretion can be applied when pupils are struggling with concepts and require more time, approaching them from alternative directions. Each year of learning builds on the last and pushes knowledge and understanding deeper and wider.

At GCSE, pupils are entered for exams early if they are ready. We aim to share the burden of GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy across two public examination sittings where possible. Our goal is to give the best mathematics education possible to our pupils, enabling them to achieve the best GCSE results of which they are capable.

In light of the current circumstances please contact the Headteacher’s PA, Mrs. Clare Pickup on headteacher@darlandschool.org.uk directly if you wish to have a tour of the site and a discussion about the role prior to the deadline (social distancing measures followed).

Darland High School is a hidden gem in the picturesque village of Rossett in North East Wales. We are a mixed, English-language high school serving pupils aged 11-16 in the surrounding villages of Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Holt and Llay. Set in extensive beautiful grounds the school has 850 pupils on roll.

Established in 1958, Darland High School became a comprehensive school in 1972. An extensive building programme over the years has seen the creation of the Griffin Centre, a modern two story building, housing ‘state of the art’ science laboratories and ICT suites. A new library, complete with a full ICT suite, a remodelled foyer and new cookery facilities have also been added recently.

In September 2019 we welcomed new Headteacher Joanne Lee, who has brought in many changes and the school is a 'buzz' of activity. We are at an exciting time, along with extensive refurbishment of the site our team are in the process of developing an engaging New Curriculum for a new generation of students.

Our team of over 130 staff, dedicated and hard-working, are driving towards our common goal - to offer an excellent education to the communities we serve.

We welcome tours of the school prior to application.
