About Bristol Technology & Engineering Academy (UTC)

Located in Stoke Gifford, Bristol, Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTE) is a University Technical College. Opened in 2013, the school offers places to boys and girls aged 14-19 across a very large and diverse catchment area. Although most teaching occurs on-site, the school does make use of the facilities of a local community school in order to teach particular subjects, with BTE’s main focus being on STEM subjects. The school is closely affiliated with the University of the West of England and GKN Aerospace, and maintains links with a number of other local businesses and industries such as Airbus.

Values and Vision

As a University Technical College, BTE’s primary focus is on improving the employability of its students in STEM subjects. To this end, engineering and environmental science are studied by almost all pupils at Key Stage 4, with mathematics being similarly common among sixth formers. Aside from academic teaching, however, the school also provides close co-operation with industry leaders and guidance for students in order to ensure that their skills properly fit into gaps in the local labour market.

Ofsted

“In sixth form lessons, and those for the most able students in Years 10 and 11, there is an exceptionally mature relationship between teachers and students that creates an excellent climate for learning. The quality of support for students’ personal development and well-being is outstanding.”
