Job overview

Westminster Tutors is one of the oldest tutorial colleges in the country with a long-standing reputation for superb teaching, and we were awarded Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ in all areas in our 2015 inspection. We operate in South Kensington as an independent sixth form college teaching mainly at A level, and we also have a small GCSE cohort. The college is a small, very friendly community and teachers find their work with us immensely satisfying.

Due to demand and new enrolments, we would like to appoint either one or two teachers of Mathematics to join our team. These are part time positions and we are able to offer very flexible timetables according to our teachers’ other commitments. Many of our staff are also working on PhDs, or are musicians, artists and writers. Other teachers have had high-powered careers in education or academia and now wish to teach part-time in a rewarding and stimulating environment. The diversity and range of accomplishments amongst our teachers all contribute to the unique atmosphere at the college, which is enjoyed by staff and students alike.

The successful candidate will ideally be a qualified teacher, although we place greater importance on a good degree/ postgraduate degree in Mathematics or a highly relevant subject such as Physics, and a proven ability to engage and inspire students aged 15-19. Applicants should have experience of teaching Mathematics at both A level and GCSE.

Our students have a very broad range of ability. Additional experience teaching MEI Mathematics, Further Mathematics and STEP would be a definite advantage. Alternatively, experience teaching students with SEN such as dyspraxia and Asperger’s or remedial Maths for candidates who are struggling to obtain a C at GCSE would also be an advantage.

Westminster Tutors was founded in 1934 and is one of the oldest remaining tutorial colleges in the country.  The college now operates as an independent sixth form college admitting students aged 16-25 and, while it was originally based in Westminster, it is now situated in South Kensington in two Victorian terrace houses.

Westminster Tutors retains its long-standing reputation for academic excellence and offering highly qualified tutors who ensure each student reaches their full academic potential.   Much teaching is still one-to-one, while some classes are offered in very small groups of two or three students.  We have high aspirations for all of our students and our approach speaks for itself: attainment, added value and onward higher education destinations are exceptional.

The maximum capacity at the college is 45 students, which means each student receives superb pastoral support according to individual needs, and staff find their work highly rewarding as levels of engagement are so high.  The college has a strong ethos of inclusion and a good number of students have special educational needs, mental health needs or neurological differences such as autism or ADHD.  Westminster Tutors is academically non-selective and admissions are therefore based on whether the student has academic aspirations and motivation in line with the college’s offering and whether we are able we are able to meet the student’s individual needs through our strong system of pastoral support, which includes mentoring for students with additional needs.

Our staff find their work truly rewarding due to the very high levels of engagement and the fact that they can enjoy the impact that their expertise and commitment has on each and every student.  The students' behaviour is exemplary and they love being at the college, while 100% of our parents would recommend us.

Westminster Tutors really is a unique institution and it is a pleasure to work for us!
