Job overview

We are currently looking for able and experienced secondary-level teachers to teach maths on Saturdays. Although our students are typically in years 4, 5 or 6 when they come to us, we prefer to work with specialised teachers from secondary schools, rather than primary school teachers whose training has been more general.

The students who come to us are typically ambitious and capable, yet we find that they have rarely been challenged by the maths they are doing at primary school. For many of our students, these tutoring classes will be their first real introduction to complex, worded maths questions that test the depth of a student’s understanding. We help our students to develop their ability to think logically and use maths to solve real world problems.

We do try to allow for some freedom in the way our lessons are taught, and we try to avoid overwhelming our students with the iterative, mechanical tasks that many tutoring programmes employ. We do not promote a “system” or “method”, but rather we depend on the quality of our teachers and the conviction that children can improve considerably when presented with the sort of challenges they simply aren’t given at a primary school level.

We are aware that many secondary school teachers will not have experience teaching children in the age group we cater to, but nevertheless we are hoping for candidates who can put across information to young students in a way they can understand and respond to. Our classes are kept at a maximum of 13 students, and lessons will take place in either Sutton or Kingston at a local secondary school.

We provide 11 plus tuition for entrance into grammar schools in Sutton and Kingston upon Thames

We are an educational company specialising in preparing children for entrance to some of the top selective schools in the country. These mainly consist of grammar schools and independent schools in Kingston Upon Thames, Sutton and the wider Surrey area.

There are 164 grammar schools in the UK and gaining a place requires pupils to achieve an outstanding score in the 11 plus exam.

Our aim is to hire outstanding teachers to support our students in their exams. You can learn more about our 11 plus courses by going to our website.

How pupils gain entry into selective schools

To gain entry into a grammar school or an independent school, students in Surrey are required to pass a test, known as the 11 plus exam. The 11 plus exam for grammar schools in Kingston Upon Thames and Sutton is specifically known as the Selective Eligibility Test or SET.

Pupils in Surrey will take the 11 plus exam at the beginning of Year 6. The 11 plus can test students in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning, but for the grammar schools in Surrey, only Maths and English usually appear on the exam.

We have been teaching pupils to pass the 11 plus exam in London for over 15 years and have been successful in getting thousands of children a place at an independent school or grammar school.

Our approach to teaching

We give our students a chance to experience secondary school-level teaching in the sort of small, focused classes that they simply don’t have access to at their own schools. We want our students to be challenged by the work we give them, and as such we rely on the dedication and excellence of our teachers and teaching assistants to help them get to grips with the material we set them.
