Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring, enthusiastic and vibrant Teacher of Mathematics to join our well established department. You will be required to teach mathematics at KS3 and KS4, with an opportunity to teach A Level Mathematics. You will join an outstanding mathematics team who pride themselves on their innovative approach to supporting every student to achieve their full potential. You will benefit from entering a collaborative department who welcome forward thinking initiatives and are able to offer a new colleague advice, support and professional development opportunities in a friendly, positive and creative environment.

Mathematics is a thriving department with a proven track record of outstanding student achievement at GCSE and A Level. All lessons are taught in specialist rooms at both the Thurston and the Beyton Campuses, equipped with the latest AV equipment and interactive whiteboards. Mathematics is a popular subject in the sixth form with a large uptake at A Level where courses in Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Mechanics and Further Mathematics are currently all offered. Results in mathematics are consistently high; last summer 70% of Year 11 students achieved A* - C and at A Level, 39% of students achieved an A or A*.

This post would be equally appropriate for an experienced or a newly qualified teacher. For a suitably skilled and experienced candidate, the opportunity exists to become a Teaching and Learning Lead Practitioner. As a Lead Practitioner, you will play a key role in supporting the work of the Assistant Principal: Teaching and Learning in the development of outstanding teaching and learning across the college.

Specifically, you will:

  • lead the innovative delivery of new teaching and learning methodologies; Challenge and support teaching staff across the college in the pursuit of outstanding learning for all students
  • build a community of outstanding practice in teaching and learning throughout Thurston Community College and the Thurston Partnership primary schools
  • work within significant partnerships across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire schools to share CPD, best practice and innovative approaches (e.g. The Thurston Partnership of Schools and CASSA: The Cambridge and Suffolk Schools Alliance).

The importance of the Teaching and Learning Lead Practitioner role is reflected by the allocation of a TLR cash allowance, but more notably, by a significantly reduced teaching load.

Thurston Community College is a thriving mixed comprehensive school which boasts a strong sense of community, a supportive, caring ethos and a positive, friendly atmosphere. Staff morale is high (recognised by Ofsted in all recent inspections) because Thurston Community College offers an exciting, dynamic learning environment where staff work collaboratively, share a common sense of purpose and are relentless in the pursuit of outcomes of the highest quality for every student.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection (May 2013) the college was graded as 'a Good school which is well led and managed'. Ofsted recognised that 'the behaviour of students is outstanding; they are mature, polite and courteous in their dealings with adults and other students and they are eager to learn.'

Recently reorganised from a 14 - 18 upper school to form an 11 - 18 secondary school, we are proud of the initial successes of our new structure. Externally moderated tests in English and mathematics confirm that students at KS3 are making rapid progress and 2016 outcomes at KS4 and KS5 indicate that progress and attainment are in line with the national average and improving.

Our guiding principles are "inspire; empower; achieve". Our ambition is that every student will be inspired by learning, empowered to seize life's opportunities and will leave Thurston Community College as a happy, confident and well-rounded young person, having achieved their full potential.

Thurston village is a 40 minute drive or train journey from Cambridge, where road and rail links provide transport to central London in less than an hour.
