Job overview

Teacher of Mathematics with the potential for Second in Department

Role Details

We are looking to appoint an exceptional and ambitious Mathematics teacher to join a thriving department. For the right candidate, there may be the opportunity to assume the role of Second in Department, assisting the current Head of Department in the delivery of an increasingly diverse and inspiring programme of Mathematics.

The successful candidate will join a strong and experienced department. They will be familiar with the demands of teaching across a wide ability and age range. Candidates should be excited by the prospect of A Level teaching, with confidence in both pure and applied modules. There will be an additional opportunity to teach Further Mathematics for the right candidate.

This post would suit an innovative and energetic teacher of Mathematics wishing to contribute to the development of the department. Applications are welcome from candidates at all stages in their careers, with a full and recognised induction programme in place which, for NQTs, will lead to QTS.

Mathematics Department

The Department consists of eight teachers reporting to the Head of Mathematics

Pupils follow the Edexcel/Pearson IGCSE syllabus with everyone aiming to take the Higher Paper. Some pupils in the top set also prepare for and take the Additional Mathematics Qualification (OCR). At A Level, students sit Mathematics and Further Mathematics, following the Edexcel/Pearson syllabus.

The Department is proud of its results at both IGCSE and A Level. Last year, 100% of the Fifth Form cohort gained A*-C grades, with 84% at A*-B level. At A Level in 2016, the department results were 94% A*-C, with 71% at A* to A. It is a consistently popular choice for A Level study. However, the department is far from complacent, and is determined to implement strategies that will ensure that standards are consistently high. This represents an exciting challenge, and the right candidate will play an important role in supporting the Head of Department and his team in exploring and evaluating new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Duties:

At Cokethorpe School, teachers are expected to

· Inspire a love of Maths in pupils, based on excellent subject knowledge and innovative, creative teaching techniques.

· Be accountable for the progress made by pupils, both in terms of internal and external communications – for example, through Progress Review Evenings and written reports.

· Develop strategies to support pupils in becoming independent and effective learners.

· Work with the Head of Department to promote the Mathematics Department and Mathematics in general; organising extra-curricular experiences to stretch and challenge all pupils.

· Play a full and committed role in the development of the whole learning experience of pupils within the school, including participation in tutoring, the AOB programme and, if appropriate, Games.

· Take part in, and, where appropriate, contribute to a full and varied Professional Development programme.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
