Teacher of Mathematics
September 2019 or January 2020
Waingels is a very successful 11 to 18 Comprehensive school serving its local community. Our successes and achievements can be attributed to our commitment to establish and grow a Better Never Stops culture, providing a safe, inclusive and rich learning environment where students feel safe and valued, founded on respectful relationships for all. Our ethos and culture are values based. We set high standards and expect all our students and staff to be respectful, kind, resilient and proud of our school, our achievements and our community. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated department and will have the opportunity to teach at KS3, 4 and 5.
Our values underpin our “Waingels Ready” expectations that we have for everyone within the Waingels community. These expectations form the basis of everything we do, and everything we believe in as a school and as a community.
We are very pleased with our recent Ofsted feedback (February 2018) and how it has endorsed the achievements, improvements and direction that we are travelling in. Ofsted noted that:
- Waingels “continues to be a good school…where standards are rising rapidly”
- Staff feel that they are “valued as their opinions are considered when reshaping practices” and that “people have the courage to try new things and we share success”
- “Pupils behave well in lessons and have a good attitude towards learning”
- “As a result of improvements that leaders have implemented, standards are rising rapidly”
Our students follow an academic core curriculum throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This includes the study of History, Geography and a Language as well as English, Maths and Science. But our students also have the opportunity to do a range of practical and vocational subjects including a wide range of creative and performing arts, physical education and other humanities like Business studies, Psychology and Economics.
Mathematics is a successful, large and supportive department. We deliberately have a mix of experience levels within the teaching team, finding that this gives us the best combination for our students. We have an excellent record on staff retention and the training and professional development of staff is at the core of our ethos.
With regard to the curriculum, we are currently in the process of migrating to a Mastery based approach in Year 7 with a view to developing stronger lifelong mathematics skills and see this as an exciting opportunity.
All of our students are entered for the Mathematics GCSE. We also consider, on a student by student basis, whether each student would benefit from access to other courses and qualifications. We enter some students for the Entry Level Certificate, as well as having the opportunity to prepare high achieving students to take the FMSQ Additional Mathematics qualification. We are introducing the Mathematics Awards for some Year 11 students this year.
We are a very popular department for KS5 students. Our Mathematics and Further Mathematics classes are usually full and we offer the Core Mathematics AS option. Our A level results are strong, with students regularly achieving double A*’s.
Outside the formal curriculum we offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities and clubs. Our students travel the world – recent trips have been to China, Poland, Berlin, skiing in Utah, and Barcelona, along with many opportunities to attend fieldwork, theatres and museums more locally. Our students are also very active in the community working alongside local and overseas charities to raise money for good causes.
If you feel your values and ethos align with ours, this is an exciting opportunity for you! We are looking for someone with energy and vision that is ambitious for themselves and the young people of the school. You will have a growth mindset and believe in offering dynamic Maths learning across the Key Stages.
