Job overview

We are a traditional school (founded 1714), have a strong sense of values and adopt a healthy scepticism towards the latest trends.

Required for September 2019, an enthusiastic and ambitious Mathematics teacher who

• has excellent teaching skills

• is able to work effectively as part of a team

• has the ability to teach Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level

• is committed to continued professional development

• has a genuine desire to ensure the success of pupils.

This is a rare opportunity to work with our supportive, motivated and intelligent colleagues in a department which is one of the strongest in an outstanding school. Applications from Newly Qualified Teachers and Recently Qualified Teachers are encouraged and a high quality NQT package would be available if appropriate. The post would suit any ambitious teacher early in their career as the Continued Professional Development opportunities in the school are excellent.

The Maths department is active, well organised and hard-working. Over many years it has enjoyed an enviable reputation both inside the school and in Cumbria. The progress 8 score for the last academic year was 0.34 with over 78% of pupils achieving grades 9-4. This places it amongst the best in the county. The behaviour of our pupils is exceptional as we have strong pastoral systems in place and it was described by OFSTED in our most recent inspection as “impeccable”.

Academic results in Maths are always excellent and our intake is truly comprehensive. At GCSE we enter all of our pupils for the AQA linear specification. Many students opt to study Mathematics in our Sixth Form where we follow the Edexcel A-Level courses for Mathematics and Further Mathematics and the AQA course in Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

The Nelson Thomlinson School wants all students to achieve academic excellence in a caring and nurturing learning environment. It works at maintaining strong relationships with parents and pupils and believes that in order to succeed, a three-way partnership needs to exist. The school has the motto: Fide et Operis, translating from Latin to Faith and Works.
