The Post:

We are seeking a dynamic, caring and committed full-time Teacher of MFL (French and Spanish) to join our dedicated, enthusiastic MFL Department. The successful candidate will teach across the year groups in the Senior School and possess the ability to teach up to A level in either French and / or Spanish.

The MFL Department:

Our MFL department is a supportive, challenging and rewarding environment, committed to the provision of high-quality education for all pupils. We are keen to provide a positive language learning experience across all Key Stages.

We currently teach French, Spanish and German, and the successful candidate will teach across the year groups in the Senior School, including Key Stage 5 in French and / or Spanish.  A willingness to participate in extra-curricular activities, including trips abroad within the MFL framework, or beyond, is desirable.

The MFL team work together to share outstanding practice and resources, and to develop the curriculum and Schemes of Work, particularly in light of recent changes to examinations.  Valuing our pupils is a top priority and we offer a variety of opportunities and responses in order to tailor our teaching to the individual.

Curriculum Arrangements:

Year 7 and 8 experience an introduction to both French and Spanish, learning about the culture, developing a foundation in the grammar and vocabulary, and building confidence in their ability to express themselves in the target language.

Year 9 continue with one or both of the languages from Year 7 and 8, focusing on tenses, extending their opinions, and adding to their vocabulary repertoire, across a range of relevant topics, with a view to preparing the individual for further study at Key Stage 4.

All pupils are expected to study one language at GCSE, but we offer the opportunity to study two if desired.

At present we offer three languages (French, Spanish and German) to A Level, dependent on choices.

The successful candidate will teach a full-time timetable.  Involvement in departmental planning and leading extra-curricular activities is expected.

Key Qualities and Person Specification:

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills, experiences and qualities:

• Be passionate about MFL and have the ability to inspire young people, offering a positive language learning experience at all times;

• Be caring, supportive, enthusiastic, innovative and creative, acting as a role model to colleagues and pupils;

• Possess excellent lesson planning skills, being willing and able to adapt their teaching to stretch and challenge all of our pupils, including those with additional needs;

• Be committed to raising standards and continuously monitoring pupil progress, including designing and facilitating timely assessments;

• Assist with curriculum reviews where needed, inputting into the departmental development plan, regularly reflecting on practice and sharing in the future vision of the department;

• Possess outstanding professional and personal qualities and the ability to remain calm under pressure;

• Promote high expectations, both in terms of pupils’ achievement and their behaviour;

• Be proficient in the use of ICT in the classroom (including remote teaching, should this be required) and confident in using new technologies to share and promote good practice;

• Be committed to the mission, aims, ethos and standards of Abbey Gate College.

Salary:

The salary for this position will depend upon the qualifications and relevant experience of the successful candidate.
