Teacher of Music (choral and contemporary music specialist)
For September 2018 (or as soon as possible)
We are a young school (opened in 2011) yet have rapidly established a significant reputation in music and the wider performing arts in the region. Since the beginning, music has been central to the life of the school. In addition to curriculum music, our musical productions are outstanding, we have remarkable instrumentalists and our informal Tuesday lunchtime concerts (TLC) draw large and appreciative audiences each week. Our superbly equipped 500 seater auditorium is the envy of most schools. The facilities include our Steinway D grand piano, the first, and one of only two, in Penang.
We have joint Heads of Music, Curriculum and Instrumental. We now seek to develop the musicality of the school further with an enthusiastic and gifted choral and contemporary music specialist , who can lead choir, jazz, pop and rock initiatives to complement our formal music programme.
The appointee will teach junior curriculum music (years 7-9) and contribute to another subject area within the school according to their experience. He/she will contribute fully to our enrichment programme, taking a full role in the facilitation of concerts, including TLC. In 2019, we are opening our new junior school , and so in a year’s time there is a possibility of a shared music specialist role between the two schools, an added attraction of this vacancy.
A high level of spoken and written English is a prerequisite. We will also expect a strong academic background, and experience of the English school curriculum. The school participates in the full range of externally available music qualifications, and has superb record of achievement in these at the highest levels.
There is a dynamic staff culture at the school with strong emphasis on professional development which has a national reputation. There is a focus on the use of IT in all subjects in a blended and realistic educational environment, achieving the best outcomes with varied approaches. Since the foundation of the school, POWIIS has built a significant academic reputation with outstanding results, although we have students of a wide range of abilities, all equally deserving of the highest quality of teaching to the level of their potential.
The school offers an holistic education and all staff are involved in our extensive co-curricular programme. We particularly look forward to expanding the opportunities we can offer in contemporary music ensemble and choral work, within this programme. The pastoral care of all our students is a priority and staff are allocated a small group of tutees across the age range of the school, for whom they will provide support and mentoring in their academic progress and personal development. Opportunities may exist to join our boarding staff, while all staff are involved in our boarding programme on an occasional basis.
Malaysian work permits are usually granted for two or three years. Contracts are therefore fixed term, but continuity is important for the school; it is hoped that appointments will be seen as longer term, with renewal of contracts common in the school. The school is proud of its staff stability, as most enjoy the lifestyle the region provides and the professional progression we actively promote. The staff is predominantly European, who share with other international and Malaysian colleagues, outstanding facilities, resources and professional opportunities.
