Job overview

The School:

We are a popular, inclusive Church of England secondary school in Camberwell, South London. Ofsted judged us to be ‘outstanding’ for care and welfare of students and a ‘good’ school overall. We are also a SIAMS ‘excellent’ school. We have strong behaviour systems, a caring approach, and an unyielding commitment to providing a great education to the students of our community. We also invest heavily in staff professional learning, giving our teachers fantastic preparation for future career progression.

Music at Saint Gabriel’s College:

Music plays an important role in the life of our school. We have a substantial peripatetic music team that offers lessons on piano, guitar, steel pans, percussion, strings, woodwind, brass, and singing. Music lessons are free for all students at Saint Gabriel’s College, and all Year 7 students are encouraged to learn a musical instrument. We hold three major in-school concerts per term, with over 130 students participating. These concerts are well-attended by parents, carers, and members of the community. Music also features prominently in our church services throughout the year, with our choir, brass band, and orchestra regularly performing.

We have a fully developed music curriculum at KS3 and KS4. Year 7 and 8 students have one music lesson per week. In Year 9, students choose Creative Arts options, including music, and receive two lessons per week. Students can continue with music at GCSE level in Year 10, where it is a popular option subject with students achieving good results. We have access to multiple practice rooms, a variety of instruments, a substantial percussion collection (including Djembes, Dun Duns, and Sabar drums), and a fully resourced music technology suite with Apple Macs and MIDI keyboards. Additionally, the school boasts a recording studio and a state-of-the-art performance space with PA and lighting rig.

Ensemble rehearsals take place every day after school, with our team of teachers working collaboratively to rehearse and prepare the students. Students participate in instrumental examinations, performances, festivals, and competitions in the local area, including venues such as Southwark Cathedral, SouthBank Centre, local churches, and parks in the community. We have strong links with various music groups in the area, having collaborated closely with Lambeth Council, Pegasus Opera, School Ground Sounds, and YouthSayers.

Individual:

We seek to appoint an ambitious and talented Teacher of Music to work alongside our experienced Director of Music and a team of fantastic Music Teachers to ensure high-quality teaching and learning with the Creative Arts Department.

Main responsibilities:

  • To ensure that students achieve strong outcomes, no matter their starting point.
  • To teach Music at KS3 and KS4.
  • To develop the curriculum and raise standards in Music at KS3 or KS4

Role: Permanent

About Saint Gabriel's College

Saint Gabriel’s College is a small inclusive Church of England secondary school where every member of the community is valued. All our students are encouraged to achieve excellence by working hard, continuously improving, growing spiritually and thinking of others.

We know that with appropriate encouragement, challenge and support, our students will shine with confidence in their learning, grow in their spiritual and moral awareness and develop the skills and attitudes necessary to make the world a better place.

Our mission is to ensure that ‘we will all fulfil our unique God-given potential’. Our school chaplain, a member of our Leadership Team, helps students and staff of every faith and none to develop spiritual self-awareness and inner strength.

As a small, inclusive school, we are committed to recognising, and fully developing, the potential of each and every student, whatever his or her starting point. We set high expectations in all things and pride ourselves on getting the best out of people. Our staff are committed and enthusiastic, and we expect the same from our students.

We have a broad and balanced curriculum, which fully prepares students to go on to achieve highly in sixth form and university. We put particular emphasis on developing students’ in the Creative Arts. For example, we expect all pupils to learn a musical instrument in Year 7. We believe that music imparts the discipline required for academic success and the joy that shared performance brings.

We work as a family. For example, every student is a member of one of our three Learning Communities.  This ensures excellent relationships across the school, because students support and encourage each other, and each child is known and nurtured. We know that strong partnerships with parents and carers make a huge difference to success at school, so we work hard to build strong home/school relationships.

I am proud to be Principal of Saint Gabriel’s College. It is a privilege to lead such dedicated colleagues and fantastic students. Please look around our website to find out all the wonderful things that go on at the school every day. Better still, you are very welcome to visit us, to see for yourself what makes Saint Gabriel’s College so special.

Nick Butler, MBA
Principal
