Job overview

We require a dynamic teacher specialising in Music to join our Performing Arts faculty. If you are an ambitious and enthusiastic teacher of Music this is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding and innovative individual to play a pivotal role in the Performing Arts faculty and the wider school. Experience of leading extra-curricular activities in Music would be desirable.

Northampton Academy is a transformational school serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'good' by Ofsted in all areas in February 2016.  This is a great opportunity for someone intelligent, astute and ambitious to build on this foundation towards excellence and help us as we strive for excellence in everything we do.

Northampton Academy is part of United Learning, a unique group of independent and state schools working together to achieve the best in everyone. Our vision is to provide excellent education so that all young people are able to make a success of their lives. If we are to realise this vision, we need to make sure we attract, develop and reward the key ingredient – you.

You will be working in a faculty that is committed to continually raising standards. The department is very well-resourced, with one large Mac suite plus two fully equipped Music classrooms which include a world percussion room within which we have an authentic Javanese Gamelan orchestra, a full samba kit and a class set of Djembe drums. In addition, there are four practice rooms and a fully equipped recording studio. We also have a full-time Performing Arts Technician.

Wherever your location, we invite applications from NQTs looking to start an exciting new career or from experienced teachers looking for a new and highly desirable opportunity.

We wish to appoint a passionate advocate for Music both within the curriculum and through the extra-curricular programme offered out to students. If you are seeking a role which will make a difference not only to our students and the wider community but will also look after your well-being and personal development, this is the role for you

We will offer:

  • An exciting role in a successful oversubscribed academy;
  • An opportunity to make a difference in the community;
  • A personal induction programme;
  • On-going professional training and development as well as networking opportunities throughout the group of academies and United Learning;
  • A competitive salary, an on-site fitness centre, a bespoke personal development package and a flexible benefit scheme.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons.  To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally
