Closing date:

Lister Community SchoolNewham

Date posted:
Start date: September 2019
Contract type: Full Time
Salary: Classroom Teachers Payscale (Inner London)
Contract term: Fixed Term
Suitable for NQTs: Yes

In our December 2018 Ofsted the inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff. In addition, our ‘impressive music provision’ was given as an example of how the school is ‘relentless in pursuing improvement’ and helps place the school at the centre of our local community.

The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including becoming the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Music Foundation and the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced DBS checks.

TEACHER OF MUSIC

One (1) Year Fixed Contract (in the first instance)

Classroom Teachers Payscale (Inner London)

Required for September 2019

(NQTs are welcome to apply)

This is a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional teacher of Music to join a dynamic team which is growing in order to enhance the music provision across our school community. Lister is a successful community comprehensive, with specialisms in Science and Music, and provides a broad and rich curriculum for all its students. As part of its music specialism Lister has sought ways to further engage with its local primaries. From September the Music team be delivering whole class instrumental lessons to some of these primaries and as a result the successful candidate will have a wonderful opportunity to teach at KS2 and KS3 level.

In the last five years Lister has made a huge commitment to Music education, and now provides every student in Years 7, 8 and 9 with free small group instrumental tuition.  Following the creation of a non-teaching Director of Community Music post, our students now benefit from an exceptional range of partnerships and collaborative work with organisations such as Newham Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Southbank Centre, and others. Last year, in collaboration with Newham Music, the department led on a large-scale borough-wide project of their own: a grass-roots community opera project that brought together 250 local young people and residents to write, compose and perform a new piece of work by Lister students and their families. The resulting opera, ‘Full Circle: A Community Opera for Newham’ won national recognition by winning the ’outstanding musical initiative’ award at the Music Teacher Awards in March. We are delighted that in 2019 the opera will be performed at both the Southbank Centre in June as part of Refugee Week celebrations, and as the massed ensemble for up to 700 performers at the Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November.

The Music team are ambitious for our students, staff and local community. Lister is committed to continuing to develop high quality music education with high levels of student participation. The school benefits from a partnership with the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, and recently participated in a 5th anniversary concert with other MiSST schools at the London Palladium. The department also works very closely with Newham Music, the local Music Education Hub, to offer joint provision and improve access to music for students across the borough.  The successful candidates will join a very strong team, with three other teachers and a core group of peripatetic teachers who are committed to working with the school and with our feeder primaries. We are actively seeking highly skilled and dedicated musicians and teachers who will work with our talented and motivated team to ensure that the Music education at Lister is genuinely world-class.

Excellent instrumental skills on strings, woodwind or brass are essential; so too are the commitment, subject knowledge and high expectations which will lead to students achieving top grades in this subject. Willingness to work collaboratively and to support a wide range of extracurricular activities, including residential trips and high profile visits and performances, is essential. Expertise in a string instrument would be an advantage; however, we welcome applicants from all musical backgrounds who are open to a challenge and will bring other expertise and skills to the team.
