Job overview

A challenging and engaging curriculum, a focus on collaborative learning and first-class teaching resources have all made Caterham Preparatory School  a leading IAPS co-educational day school for children from three to eleven years of age.  We believe that all children should receive a broad and balanced education, and our dedicated teams work hard to foster curiosity, encourage effort, maintain enthusiasm and develop the ability of every child to think and learn. We are now looking for an individual who is passionate about teaching music to this age group to take a full timetable of teaching across EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

We truly value personal and professional development at Caterham. So whilst you may be an experienced teacher, we are just as interested in hearing from you if you are at the beginning of your career. As well as teaching a full timetable, you will be responsible for various co-curricular ensembles, including a Music Theory Club, and liaising with colleagues and parents in organising concerts and services. Whilst you will present an inclusive approach to your lessons, you will also identify and nurture gifted and talented students.

As a community, our staff are expected to play a full and positive part in the life of our school. So the willingness to become involved in and contribute to other co-curricular activities will be important – as will a flexibility to do so on weekends and evenings when necessary. You will need a degree in Music and QTS (or equivalent), excellent piano/keyboard skills and to be technologically confident – ideally with experience of GarageBand and Sibelius. The ability to play an additional instrument would be advantageous.

As one of the best schools of our kind, Caterham offers you generous remuneration and ongoing professional development opportunities.  It is well-placed for access to town and country: the beautiful two hundred acre site is five minutes’ drive from Junction 6 of the M25, fifteen minutes’ drive from Gatwick and a short walk from the local station, with several trains an hour into London.

Caterham Preparatory School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Closing date: Sunday 4th December

Caterham Prep is a vibrant and thriving part of the Caterham family, providing an outstanding education that enables every pupil to achieve his or her maximum potential intellectually, physically and creatively in an ambitious but nurturing environment.  The Caterham School community shares a 200 acre campus in the beautiful Harestone Valley and educates pupils from age 3 to 18.  The Prep School is nestled at the far end of the campus, surrounded by its own woodland.

Learning how to learn is a key part of a Caterham education, from the Early Years at the Prep School to the Sixth Form at the Senior School and is, in our view, an essential skill for modern life.  We believe that a truly excellent school is about more than academic achievement alone:  it is also about developing a passion for learning, a capacity for problem-solving, independent and critical thinking, self-awareness and resilience, self-confidence without arrogance and genuine interests that extend beyond the confines of the classroom.

We believe in providing an ‘Education for Life’ for all Caterhamians and our innovative curriculum blends the best of tradition with exciting opportunities such as Performing Arts, Mandarin, Digital Innovation, 21st Century Skills and Global Citizenship.  Our unique Outdoor Learning programme, developed in and taking advantage of our own responsibly managed forest, runs alongside all of this, together with an award-winning Wellbeing programme that runs through the heart of everything we do.

All classrooms are equipped with computers, interactive board and Apple TV, allowing teachers and pupils to collaborate and share screens using the school’s iPads, which are also used for learning across the site, into the school’s grounds and at home.  For more advanced computer use in our Digital Innovation programme, the school also has a full ICT suite, equipped with desktop PCs and a 3D printer, as well as a separate Music Lab with its own dedicated computers and electric keyboards.  Technology spills out of the classroom and into our outdoor learning and co-curricular offering, built on our belief that technology can be used to support and enhance learning wherever it takes place.
