Job overview

We are seeking an inspirational and talented Teacher of Music to join our thriving, successful Music department.  Reporting to the Director of Music, they will help maintain and expand the College’s reputation as a centre for musical excellence in which pupils of all abilities are stretched and encouraged to get involved.

Queen’s is continuously filled with the joy of music-making.  On any visit, you can expect to hear pupils performing as soloists or participating in our orchestra, one of our choirs or the diverse range of instrumental ensembles.

The department has two teaching classrooms and five practice rooms.  Working with the Director of Music and second in department, we have a dedicated team of fifteen Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs) with approximately half of our pupils having weekly individual music tuition.

All pupils study Music as part of the curriculum in Years 7 to 9, and the subject is a popular choice at GCSE and A-level, with numbers increasing every year.  Most A-level Music students continue to study Music at conservatoire or university; recent leaver destinations include the Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge.

Our busy extracurricular programme includes fifteen weekly rehearsals, a half-termly Informal Concert series, end-of-term concerts, regular masterclasses, an annual collaborative Jazz Evening with Harrow School Big Band, charity events and large end-of-term services at All Souls Church, including our annual Christmas Carol service.

We also perform a musical every two years; previous productions include The Sound of Music, Beauty & the Beast and Oliver!  We also hope to run a tour to Europe over the next year or two.

Our weekly ensembles comprise Crescendo Strings, Sinfonietta, String Quartet, Cello Ensemble, Top Winds, Flute Choir, Junior Brass, Brass Ensemble, Orchestra, Class 3 Choir, College Choir, Chamber Choir, Performing Arts Society, Queen’s Rock Band, Composition Workshop and Music Appreciation Society.
