Beethoven or Beyoncé? Grieg or grime? Mahler or Motown? Shostakovich or the Spice Girls?

Whatever your personal music preferences, we need a music teacher who will inspire our young people to love this essential subject. We need someone who is eager to make creative curriculum choices, helping pupils find their musical voices as you develop their ability to listen, perform and compose.

Whether you are an Early Career Teacher or you have been teaching for decades, our unparalleled professional development opportunities will empower you to progress in your career. We want people who are similarly driven to us. We offer superb professional development opportunities, including the full suite of NPQs.

Ofsted graded Smestow Academy‘Inadequate’ when it was in the previous trust. Since joining Matrix in January 2023, the school has experienced a very rapid turnaround. You may have heard about this from recent news coverage:

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/black-country/visited-inadequate-secondary-school-wasnt-28096068

Here’s an excerpt: “As I walked through the corridors, stuck my head into classrooms and spoke with polite and smiling pupils, it certainly didn't feel like I was in what is, or at least was last time Ofsted was here, one of the worst schools in the West Midlands.”

Although things are now a lot better, we’re not going to rest on our laurels. Our expectations are high. Our bottom line is if it wouldn’t be not good enough for our own relations, it’s not good enough for our pupils and staff. There is still work to do and we need people – perhaps people like you – who can’t wait to get stuck in.

Matrix Academy Trust’s vision is Education Without Exception. We want the best for every child regardless of where they were born, how much money they do or don’t have and who they are (sex, gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation). We want people who will not only grow the next generation but also people who are eager to take every opportunity to grow themselves.

We are committed to fostering a culture that values the health and well-being of all employees at Matrix Academy Trust. We are proud to offer a comprehensive well-being package to all employees, including access to 24/7 online GP, physiotherapy services and counselling services. We also offer all employees annual health checks which includes the flu jab, BMI checks and a general discussion with a qualified Nurse.

To apply please download an application form and send to the Headteacher Ian Chamberlain: ichamblerlain@smestowacademy.co.uk.

You may also wish to contact him to arrange an informal look at the school for yourself.

From January 2023 Smestow Academy joined Matrix Academy Trust and embarked upon an exciting journey of rapid school improvement as experience by other schools who have previously joined the Trust.

The school is a mixed 11-18 comprehensive situated in a pleasant residential area next to attractive countryside. There are approximately 670 pupils on roll with a Sixth form provision. We are highly ambitious for our staff and pupils and fully embrace the idea that success is achieved together for all of our community.

Smestow is proudly a truly multi-cultural comprehensive school. The intake spans the full ability range and we have pupils from a rich mix of cultural backgrounds that all work together extremely well as one community. We are working hard to drive our pupils progress attainment levels to push above national figures and to become within the top 20% of schools in the country.

We offer pupils a broad and balanced curriculum in Key Stage 3, and a wide variety of option choices in Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form.  We are committed to bringing out the best in every one of our pupils and therefore support their academic study with a very strong programme of safeguarding, personal and skills development work and opportunities outside of the classroom.  We are very keen to expand this aspect of our work and encourage staff to embrace their own interests to inspire our pupils.

We have a strong pastoral system, with Heads of House and an excellent pastoral support structure, all working to support pupils to achieve the very best and enjoy their time at school.

Our motto is 'success is achieved together' and is based upon developing strong relationships between staff and pupils to create a strong collaborative approach. Through our house system pupils feel a sense of identity with Smestow and have a strong feeling of community. Staff are well supported and parental involvement is very good. The staff work hard and are rewarded with investment into their CPD opportunities.

If you are interested in working in a vibrant, supportive, ambitious school, we would be very keen to receive your application.  We welcome applications from ambitious and highly motivated individuals who want to make a significant difference to pupils lives and be part of the transformational journey of a school with ambitions to achieve a national reputation for the outstanding work we do.
