Job overview

The Post and the Department

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic and able teacher to join a strong and lively department. The post is for one year, covering the maternity leave of one of our full-time teachers.

The PE department currently consists of four full-time teachers, assisted by teaching assistants and specialist coaches. The post comprises teaching PE and Sport throughout the school and includes teaching GCSE to Year 10/11. The appointed teacher will also be involved in leading sport for students at the School’s International Section.

Responsibility for PE at d’Overbroeck’s is shared between Jonathan Richards who is Director of Sport and Martin Procter, the Head of PE for Years 7-11. Together with the two other teachers in the department they form a motivated and talented team.

The Person

We are looking for a talented teacher who is genuinely committed to enabling every student to enjoy PE and supporting them to achieve their potential. A positive and flexible approach and passion for PE are qualities we value highly.

All applicants will be expected to have a good degree in PE or a related subject and to be able to demonstrate their teaching ability. The School does not insist that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though many members of staff have an appropriate qualification.

All of the PE teachers are expected to drive the School’s minibuses (members of staff receive additional training as required). A clean driving licence is therefore essential.

Duties and responsibilities

These consist of a combination of:

Teaching

The appointed teacher will be involved in teaching Physical Education throughout the School which will include GCSE.

Extra-Curricular

The appointed teacher will be an integral part of extra-curricular programme, helping to provide opportunities throughout the school for students to participate in activities and fixtures.

Pastoral responsibilities

The successful candidate may be a Form teacher for one of the classes in Years 7-11. This will involve taking a share of the responsibility for the day to day welfare of the pupils concerned and will involve academic, pastoral and administrative responsibilities.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

We have a growing number of students trying for Duke of Edinburgh awards and we expect the appointed teacher to be involved in supporting students taking part in the scheme.

Other responsibilities

The post carries a number of day to day responsibilities which include administrative duties, liaising with other teachers, speaking to parents, supervising breaks.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
