HR Manager

The Physical Education Department at Salesian

We place high value on the ability to model good behaviours and physical skills. We would be looking to bring in an individual whose skills would complement both the physical and academic skills of the current members of the department. The Salesian PE Department is a committed to providing our students with a broad range of opportunities to achieve both in the curriculum and in extra-curricular activities. We are a passionate, supportive and enthusiastic department with a desire to constantly improve our teaching and learning. We are highly adaptive, teaching students from 11-18 across two sites. We are looking to employ a candidate, to join our department of eight who shares our values of commitment and enthusiasm and is a team player.

We currently have 3 GCSE classes in Year 11 and 2 in Year 10, achieving 94% 4-9 in 2021. We also now run the Cambridge National Sports Studies course, providing all of our students with the potential to succeed in KS4. We work collaboratively as a department, continually striving to improve our results. In the Sixth Form we achieved 70% Distinction*/Distinction at BTEC Sport Level 3 and we achieved 84% A*/A at A Level Physical Education in 2021 with 22 students set to take the exam in 2022.

Salesian is an outstanding school with an ethos that focuses on building effective relationships with pupils to foster a community feel. The PE department plays a strong role in promoting this within the school.

The PE department aims to allow our pupils to build the knowledge, skills and confidence to be active for a lifetime. The candidate would be expected to contribute to the strong extra-curricular programme we are running at the school and should be confident in potentially teaching both theory and practical PE across all Key Stages.

The school places high importance on continuing professional development in all areas of school life and as a result ECTs are well supported by the department and the school as a whole.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
