Job overview

TEACHER OF PE WITH SECOND SUBJECT MATHEMATICS OR GEOGRAPHY  (50% subject split)

Full Time/Permanent

MPS-UPS £23,720 – £39,406 per annum

Required for April 2019 or September 2019 start, a passionate teacher of PE with ability to teach Mathematics or Geography to join our team.

This is a perfect career opportunity to join a high performing team in a high performing school with a commitment to career development and would be very suitable for an ambitious teacher at the start of their career as well as a more experienced candidate.

Physical Education is a popular subject within the school.  We offer a broad range of activities across both KS3 and KS4. At KS4 we offer the Edexcel GCSE PE course and VCert Health and Fitness Technical Award, and we have achieved outstanding results in recent years.

The PE department facilities currently consist of a gymnasium, assembly hall, spacious fields and a playground. We have outside table tennis courts and one outside basketball court. We also have a cricket wicket and cricket nets which are a great asset to the school. We have our own dedicated classroom which is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and computers which are used across KS3 and KS4 lessons.

We currently have building work under way to build a brand new sports hall. The sports hall will be 4 badminton courts in size. The sports hall will be an amazing facility for our students and local community.

As a department we have a strong commitment to the school’s enrichment programme, both at break times and after school. We enjoy success within the local Partnership competitions and in other competitions within the county.

The Maths department consists of a team of 8 specialist maths teachers, an HLTA and a specialist TA.  Classes are set from Year 7 onwards and sophisticated tracking systems tightly monitor the progress of students, which in turn then supports their success.  Class sizes are flexible to ensure all students receive the teaching approaches that are right for them and gives students the opportunity to make good or better progress.

We teach our own bespoke 5-year curriculum that is designed to maximise the potential of every student.  Within the department, there is constant exploration of mathematical pedagogy to develop better student understanding.  The team is cohesive and colleagues support each other effectively in a truly collaborative environment.  The team strives to ensure that students achieve both high standards of academic achievement in maths and also an appreciation of the importance of maths in the world around them.  Regardless of past levels of success, the level of ambition and challenge for all is kept high.

The Geography department firmly believe that the route to achievement at GCSE is through developing confident Geographers throughout their five years at Willingdon Community School.  The department achieves consistently good results and operates within the mutually supportive faculty of Humanities.

Our vision is to continually raise attainment and to develop within the students an ethos of ‘caring about the world around them’.  This complements our whole school vision of Personal Excellence for every student. Being part of a community school is a rewarding and special experience.  The successful candidate will be one that also looks to support department enrichment activities (e.g. Young Geographer of the Year competition) as well as wider school and community projects.

Willingdon Community School is a high-achieving and over-subscribed (NOR 1000), 11-16, comprehensive school serving the Eastbourne and Polegate area.  The school is committed to providing the opportunity for success, in its broadest sense, to all its students, taking pride in not just their academic achievement but in the qualities that make them successful citizens.  Examination results at GCSE are consistently high with students of all abilities making good progress and adding significant value, regardless of their starting point.  In 2018, 66% of students achieved the Basics Match. The school is a lead partner with 2 other local schools in a teaching school alliance, leading on the development of new teachers and CPD more widely.  The school has an outstanding record for the quality of its training for all staff, regardless of their experience, and takes pride in developing its staff as outstanding teachers and preparing them for the next step in their career.

Staff wellbeing is of paramount importance to us at Willingdon Community School. If you are appointed, there will be a full induction day to ensure you are supported with the transition to your new role. We offer all staff 50% off Benenden Health Care. We also run many events throughout the year such as staff fitness sessions to help you have a work life balance. We are currently leading a project on reducing workload and improving outcomes for our Eastbourne improvement partners.

CPD and Talent Management of our staff is crucial at all levels. We offer a bespoke programme to each staff to ensure we develop your skillset effectively. This could mean helping you develop into an outstanding practitioner through mentoring and coaching or it could be developing your managerial skills and helping you towards middle or senior leadership. Many of our staff have embarked on the NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH qualifications. We also run an hour of training each Thursday, which staff can dip into if they see the relevance to their development. We also collaborate with many other schools across county and have offered secondment opportunities to staff.

Closing Date:  Friday, 11th January 2018 (by noon).

Interview arrangements will be sent to shortlisted applicants.

We value opportunities, aiming for success today to prepare for challenges and opportunities tomorrow. We are respectful, honest and courteous to empower each other on our unique learning journeys. We look after ourselves and each other, and show empathy, respect and compassion to all people and our environment along the way. We encourage tolerance, resilience and reflection, which in turn allows everyone to make progress every lesson. We work together as a harmonious community to be the very best versions of ourselves.

This makes us Willingdon

Willingdon Community School is a high-achieving and over-subscribed (NOR 1040), 11-16, comprehensive school serving largely, the Eastbourne and Polegate area. We are committed to talent management and ensuring that all support and teaching staff are given the opportunity to develop and progress their careers. The school prides itself on putting staff and student wellbeing as a top priority and there are many initiatives which have been established to support this e.g. subsidising Benenden healthcare by 50% for all staff members to creating staff working parties to focus on key areas for example; marking workload. Our leadership team are receptive to constructive feedback and hold regular parent, staff and student voice sessions as well as google form entries to submit feedback.

The recent Ofsted report was very positive about the journey of our school and we sustained our 'Good judgement'. Our report details: 'The school has high expectations of pupils and a strong focus on celebration and praise' It also says 'External examination outcomes are extremely strong. Pupils’ progress is significantly above national averages in most subjects, and in the highest 20% in English and mathematics.' This is largely due to teachers being 'subject experts' and also provided with the best support, CPD and leadership. Despite the recent impact of covid, our attendance was significantly above national average and we have enjoyed sharing our good practice with other colleagues in the south east region to support other children.

The school is a leading member of a number of local educational groups and partnerships, such as the Eastbourne Schools Partnership (ESP) which brings many and varied learning opportunities to both teachers and students, particularly via our links with Eastbourne College. We are a member of the SSAT, the Key and PIXL and have excellent links with outstanding schools up and down the country. These links bring cultural and intellectual capital to the school and enrich our CPD provision for staff at all levels.

The CPD and talent management of our staff is given a very high priority as we believe this is a vitally important part of improving outcomes for young people as well as invigorating teachers` passion for their areas. Willingdon is proud of its record in developing new teachers and on the quality of CPD more widely. We look forward to hosting Bill Rogers this year to talk to schools across the South East region about effective behaviour management.

The school has an outstanding record for the quality and range of professional development opportunities it offers and takes pride in developing its staff as outstanding teachers and preparing them for the next steps in their careers. We have an internal coaching team made up of excellent teachers who specify in supporting staff with the development of certain key skills. From delivering literacy within lessons to having good presence and effective engagement, our staff work positively with each other without fear of judgment. As well as being supported through in-house middle and senior leadership programmes, aspiring leaders have access to: funded NPQ and Masters Qualifications; extended programmes in Durrington Research School and leadership opportunities provided by the SSAT and ASCL.
