Job overview

The Head and Trustees seek to appoint a full-time, well-qualified, enthusiastic teacher of PE with PSHE to join our outstanding, high-achieving school. This post is to cover a maternity leave from 1 September 2024. This contract will end on the return of our colleague.

We welcome applications from ECTs for whom coaching and support will be provided, as well as experienced teachers.

The PE and PSHE Faculty is a very experienced and supportive team, and the subject is very popular with students. Every student in KS3, 4 and 5 has timetabled PE lessons and there are also a vast array of extra-curricular clubs, with the sports teams regularly representing the school at fixtures.

We are very much a family and a team at NGHS; our colleagues work exceptionally hard to help each student to achieve their potential and they also support each other. We take staff well-being extremely seriously and our Well-being Charter is included in this pack to show you what we do.

NGHS is an outstanding girls’ grammar school. We were very recently inspected by Ofsted in November 2022 and the school was judged outstanding in every category, placing us in the top 3% of schools. Please read the report here; you will see why we are so proud of our staff and students. We are also the 2020 West Midlands Secondary School of the Year and have recently won a number of accolades rewarding our work in supporting Mental Health, Holocaust Education, the Be Kind Award and the AcSEED Award.

Our governing body is incredibly supportive and experienced. Their ambition for the school keeps us on our toes, but they are passionate about enhancing opportunities for all. We are heavily oversubscribed and hold an annual entrance test. The sixth form is also full and we welcome new students from a number of high schools as well, of course, as our own Year 11s.

Please contact Interim Head, Miss S Webster, for any more information via jobs@nghs.org.uk

Details can also be found on our website at https://www.nghs.org.uk/about-us/recruitment/

Closing date - Monday 20 May at 12:00pm. However, we urge applicants to apply ASAP as we may choose to close the advert early should we receive sufficient applications to shortlist for interview. Interviews will be held during the week commencing 20 May 2024. Candidates will be notified on 20 May if they are being shortlisted for interview. Preparation for interview ill involve the planning of a 30-minute lesson (only).

NGHS is an equal opportunities employer. We are committed to the equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief. We particularly welcome applications from colleagues from under-represented backgrounds. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS, Barred List check and other recruitment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education Safer Recruitment practices. This includes sourcing police checks for any period of time spent abroad and social media account checks.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.

Values and vision

Newport Girls' High School takes great pride in its strong reputation for academic excellence. The secondary school works hard to provide a high-quality curriculum with a broad range of subjects. Teachers also seek to ensure that pupils have a caring and comfortable environment in which to learn.

The school day at Newport runs from 8.50am until 3.45pm in order to make time for daily assemblies and longer breaks. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is available including sports such as fencing, netball and hockey.

Students join NGHS from Newport, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Market Drayton and villages in between. Around 40% of students live in Newport.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
