Job overview

Bede's is seeking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of Philosophy to join us in September 2024. Our new teacher will have the talent to help every pupil to their best possible results at GCSE or A Level. You will be determined to inspire young people, and to help inculcate a love of Philosophy amongst your pupils. You will be able to enjoy working with gifted pupils who aspire to study at the very highest level as much as you enjoy working with those who find the subject particularly taxing.

The Philosophy department is under the aegis of the Head of Department, Mr Sean McIntosh. Together with History, Government and Politics; Geography; and Business and Economics the departments form the Faculty of Social Science, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy (SHAPE). You will be eager to be part of a successful faculty, teaching exciting and innovative lessons, and contributing outside the classroom as well.

The central ethos of the Philosophy Department at Bede's is that all pupils can benefit from a guided exploration of the methodology and key questions of modern philosophy. In Year 9, all pupils experience a carousel of SHAPE subjects, including two blocks of Philosophy and Religion lessons, which offer them a general grounding in some central areas of modern philosophy including ethics and arguments for and against the existence of God. Presently, pupils then have the option of taking GCSE Religious Studies (AQA) and A Level Religious Studies (OCR) as they move through the school into the Sixth Form, although the school is exploring a shift to emphasis to Philosophy qualifications in the future.

Pupils are able to develop their wider interest by attending a weekly lunchtime Philosophy Society as well as a periodic Philosophy Masterclass, participating in a range of trips and visits, and contributing to the SHAPE Magazine, an in-house publication that is produced entirely by pupils.

We also welcome applications from Early Career Teachers who will enjoy a generous level of remission on their timetable, above the level offered in other schools. They will also benefit from the expert professional mentorship of Ms Yvette Stainsby, our dedicated Head of Teacher Development.

Bede's is a busy, energetic and friendly school set in beautiful surroundings. We enjoy excellent facilities and resources and we offer superb opportunities for the personal and professional development of our teachers. We look forward to reading about how you would seek to contribute to the School's extensive co-curricular programme in your application; we are excited to hear how you will infect the pupils with your own passion whether this be within SHAPE or beyond it.

Delve into our recruitment booklet and uncover more information about the experience of teaching at Bede’s.
