Job overview

Purpose of the Role

The successful applicant will be joining a thriving, successful department, working alongside dedicated members of staff teaching Fine Art, Photography and History of Art. The subjects within the department are popular subjects at GCSE and A level with some of our students carry on the study at degree level. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic, energetic, forward-thinking and passionate about supporting innovation in the visual arts.

We are looking for a lively and engaging teacher who is a confident classroom practitioner. They will be responsible for the successful delivery of Photography and Art across the Key Stages. The successful candidate will work closely as a team with the other members of the department to ensure the provision of enriching and exciting art lessons, working to maintain and improve all results.

This is a maternity role lasting for twelve months. It will initially be a 0.8 contract, rising to full time from September 2023.

The Department

Three members of staff teach in an arrangement of three dedicated Art rooms. There are also, several areas around the school which are used for the display of exemplary work.

Pupils take Art subjects seriously and respond to teachers’ high expectations, whatever their ability. Pupils are well supported by staff. For GCSE, we follow the Fine Art and Photography specifications for the Edexcel Exam Board. Results in public examinations are excellent. Students go on to study at a range of top establishments for the visual arts such as St Martin’s, and Chelsea and Kingston. Past History of Art students gained places on courses in UCL, Edinburgh, Royal Holloway and Exeter. Whilst this success is valued, visual arts pupils are encouraged to investigate, explore and refine practical skills parallel to developing a creative response to the world that surrounds them. Work is individual and of personal relevance. Nurturing this original and intelligent approach enables pupils to develop skills that are of immense value within the subjects, but also far beyond them.

Pupils are encouraged to make independent visits to galleries and museums in London and beyond. Previous locations for Sixth Form field trips include New York, Barcelona and Paris. The successful candidate would be expected to help organise and participate in any future visits.

The Arts Educational Schools London, is an independent secondary school and higher education provider based in Chiswick, West London.

The Arts Educational Schools have their origin in schools founded in 1919 by Grace Cone and in 1922 by Olive Ripman. The Cone and Ripman schools were pioneers in providing  talented children with a general academic education in conjunction with specialised training in dance, drama, music and art, preparing young men and women for professional careers in or connected with the theatre. In 1939 the two schools amalgamated to become the Cone Ripman School.

Today ArtsEd continues to support a world–renowned,co-educational, independent vocational school for pupils aged 11–18 years as well as a professional conservatoire, with two main divisions, offering BA and MA degrees in Acting and BA, and MA degrees in Musical Theatre, all of which are validated by City University and accredited by Drama UK.

ArtsEd is extremely proud of its outreach programme which is central to their commitment to ensure inclusivity across everything they do. Building strong links with youth groups, colleges and sixth forms, ArtsEd aims to provide talented young people with a clear pathway to vocational training and to introduce them to the unique energy and welcome of ArtsEd.
