Job overview

Teacher of Physical Education (Wed-Fri, fixed term contract)

The Skinners' Kent Academy are seeking to appoint a motivated, creative and enthusiastic Teacher of Physical Education for a fixed term contract until 21 July 2023. The successful candidate will have the capacity to help us establish a dynamic learning environment, and a culture of enthusiasm for learning. Their professionalism and dedication will enable our students to achieve more than they believe possible.

Working for the PE department at SKA is nothing short of exciting. The department is growing each year, be it the number of staff, the number of lessons in KS3, the accredited courses we offer or the number of students taking part in our extracurricular programme. Our facilities include a full-size all-weather pitch, sports hall with cricket nets, three multi-use games areas, a brand-new fitness suite, a dance studio, and a dedicated classroom for PE theory. All staff have access to state-of-the-art gym facilities as well as support from the PE department to use the equipment.

We currently have four professionals in the department, who each offer very different subjects of expertise which takes us away from a traditional PE programme. Our vision as a department is to develop Physical Literacy amongst our students by giving them a breadth of activities which align with our extracurricular programme, which is taught by both PE teachers and external coaches. By the end of Year 8, students will have experienced a multitude of activities which will then assist them in choosing their pathway options for their PE lessons in Year 9. where the focus builds by preparing them for the GCSE PE practical component should they wish to select it. Even if PE is not selected as a GCSE option, students in years 10 and 11 continue to exercise through our recreational sport programme.

For KS4 students, we offer two different pathways. Students can either take the GCSE PE route, where we follow the AQA 9-1 GCSE PE syllabus or the Level 2 BTEC route where students study the BTEC First Award in Sport from Year 10. In the Sixth Form, students can choose to study the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport as part of their IB programme. We also provide fortnightly recreational PE lessons for our Sixth Form students

The foundations of the PE department at the Academy are built on hard work, organisation, and adaptability but most of all, by maintaining positive relationships with students. Not every subject gives students the opportunity to represent the school with such a sense of belonging; our department thrives by encouraging students from all sorts of backgrounds to be part of the growing extracurricular programme.

Ofsted report

“The school motto of ‘pride in our success’ permeates through how pupils conduct themselves around the school. They strive to become well-rounded and respectful members of society. Pupils show kindness and consideration to each other because they want everyone to feel included. A strong pastoral provision in every key stage means that pupils feel well supported and have someone to go to if they need help. Should bullying happen, pupils know that staff will help them resolve issues quickly. Relationships between staff and pupils are nurturing and positive. This means that pupils feel safe and well looked after.
