Job overview

Role overview

The advertised post is for a part-time teacher, able to teach Physics to GCSE and IGCSE and general science across key stages 3 and 4. The teacher will be based in The International School, but will also have a smaller amount of teaching in Years 7-11, at our Leckford Road site. The advertised post is a one-year fixed-term role to cover maternity leave, starting in September 2019.

The Post and the Department

This is an opportunity to join a successful and thriving science department, teaching in d’Overbroeck’s International School and Years 7-11. At the International School (TIS) the successful candidate will join a team of about seven science staff, under the leadership of Henry Winney. The International School takes students from years 9 to 11, all of whom are students with English as their second language. Classes have a maximum size of 10 students and there is one group in year 9, four in year 10 and an expected 4 IGCSE Physics groups in year 11.

Students may enter d’Overbroeck’s International School in years 9, 10 or 11. In year 9 students take a general science course, designed to lay foundations for those who wish to continue with sciences at IGCSE. Students who enter in year 10 will begin a two-year IGCSE Sciences course to study either double or triple science. Students who enter in year 11 study an accelerated one year IGCSE program, following the Edexcel IGCSE specifications.

Teaching

Small class sizes enable teachers to gain a detailed understanding of each individual student’s strengths and needs. We value independence of thought above mere acquisition of skills, and although we seek to provide the best possible preparation for public exams we aim to do so in such a way as to foster real understanding and enjoyment of the material being studied.

Technology is used to support teaching and learning throughout the school, including the use of interactive whiteboards, data-logging equipment, online learning, and in-class tablet computing.

Outside lessons, we are keen to provide students with opportunities for extension and support with drop in clinics for support, STEM clubs etc.

Necessary Qualifications

All applicants will be expected to have a good degree in Physics or a related subject and be able to demonstrate their teaching ability.

d’Overbroeck’s does not require that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though most members of staff do in fact possess an appropriate qualification.

Hours

The advertised post is for 0.6 of full-time, which may be taught either as three full days, or two full days and two half days, by negotiation.

Applications

Applicants should complete the Form entitled Application for a Teaching Post, and send this, along with a full Curriculum Vitae and a covering letter  to HR@doverbroecks.com

Applications will be processed on receipt. Please apply as soon as possible, but no later than Monday 29 April

N.B. Please let us know if your current post involves giving notice before the application deadline. In such cases, we will endeavour to process them and give you a response before your own notice deadline, wherever possible

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
