Job overview

Imperial College London Mathematics School (ICLMS) is a specialist sixth form maths school that opened in September 2023. We have a close partnership with Imperial College London, a world-leading university, and are part of the uMaths (University Maths Schools) network (https://umaths.ac.uk/). This is a rare and exciting opportunity to contribute to building an exceptional school.

We are seeking to appoint a teacher of physics at Imperial College London Mathematics School. This is a permanent post which is available on a part-time basis (minimum 0.5 FTE) or full-time. Part-time fractions from 0.5 FTE up to full-time will be considered.

The successful candidate will teach A level physics to Year 12 and 13 students as part of a small team and work closely with the Head of Department to develop the physics curriculum. At ICLMS our aim is to nurture new generations to lead the way in STEM and increase the diversity of students studying STEM at the most competitive universities. We are looking for a physics teacher who shares our view that this mission is important and exciting, and has the relevant experience and drive to make impact.

“As a school specialising in the mathematical sciences, physics is an important part of what we do. Our highly specialised A level STEM-based curriculum requires all students to study maths and further maths and choose either physics or chemistry or both. Currently over 95% of students take physics. Our students are truly excited by the subject, wanting to learn physics above and beyond their A levels. The students’ mathematical skill means that they are able to explore and discuss advanced ideas in physics. I regularly find students working on physics problems around the school, and dropping into physics problem solving classes is a highlight of my week.

We’re looking for a physics teacher that shares our enthusiasm for delivering an A level curriculum that is tailored to our specific context and allows us to extend students’ understanding and skill beyond A level at relevant points.”

David Lee, Headteacher

The successful candidate will recognise the importance of our mission to increase the proportion of currently underrepresented groups studying the physical sciences at university. To achieve this outcome, we offer students many opportunities beyond the curriculum to inspire them to go further in STEM. This involves trips, including to CERN, as well as extended research projects with support from university researchers and STEM industry professionals. Outreach work within the local area is also central to what we do. This involves workshops with students from local schools as well as hosting events that promote STEM. We are looking for a physics teacher who is passionate about contributing to this work.

ICLMS is located adjacent to our partner school, Woodhouse College (together are the Frontier Learning Trust) in Finchley, North London and will move into a new permanent building in Spring 2025 on the same site. If students study three A levels at ICLMS, they may opt to study an additional 4th A level from the Woodhouse College curriculum.

In line with the ethos and purpose of the school, we welcome applications from teachers from groups who are currently underrepresented in STEM industries and university courses.

Salaries will be on the sixth form college teachers’ salary scale between Point 2 and Point 9 which is currently £31,673 and £47,133 for full-time, depending on experience, plus £3,082 London Weighting, per annum. To enquire about part-time salaries, please contact personnel@iclms.ac.uk.

Please visit https://www.iclms.ac.uk/vacancies for more details and to apply. For more information about the uMaths network, please visit uMaths - the University Maths Schools Network.

Closing date for applications is Monday 15 April 2024 at noon.

Interviews will be taking place on Friday 19 April, times to be confirmed.

The Trust is committed to equality and diversity. We encourage applications from black and minority ethnic groups, which are currently underrepresented. The Trust is committed to safeguarding and the promotion of the welfare of children and young people.
