Each department receives a generous annual budget. They are extremely well resourced in all areas including ICT for which it is the school’s lead department. All the laboratories are equipped with projectors, speakers and an interactive whiteboard or touch screen TV. The laboratories are serviced by a team of four technicians with a specialist technician for each of Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Each specialist technician reports directly to their Head of Department.

There are 4 full time Physics Teachers in the department.

In Years 7 students are taught Physical Science – a combined Physics and Chemistry course over 4 periods a week, with 2 periods of Biology. Girls are introduced to GCSE concepts (9-1 Edexcel) from Year 8, where they are taught the 3 sciences separately over 6 periods. In Years 10 and 11, the girls have nine lessons of science each week, three of which are Physics, taught by a Physics specialist. All girls study for three separate sciences. Group size at KS3 and KS4 is up to 25 in each class.

Edexcel Physics examinations are taken at A level in Year 13.  Approximately 30 girls choose A level Physics each year. Girls applying to university to study Physics are offered extra lessons.

We are keen to encourage girls to consider careers in the sciences and our speakers programme regularly features scientists, engineers and doctors.

The school is ideally situated to take advantage of the many museums, lecture programmes and events in London and the Physics department also runs an annual visit to CERN.

The teacher appointed should be willing to play a full part in the life of the school including marking, report writing and parents’ evenings.

About City of London School for Girls

Academic yet unstuffy, modern yet acutely aware of its history, diverse yet with a strong sense of identity, our location in the heart of the City is definitive to the energy of our school.

City of London School for Girls is an independent day school for pupils aged 11-18 situated in the heart of the Barbican. Opened in 1894, the school provides an outstanding education for able students from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. We capitalise on our location to attract students from all over Greater London and beyond, and give them access to every learning opportunity our capital has to offer.  This is best demonstrated by our unique geography, nestled between the brutalist Barbican and looming Roman walls. Ours is an intellectually edgy, unassuming and unpretentious environment, unshackled by tradition, and imbued with a relaxed excellence. This is a refreshing and modern place in which to learn.

Our school is one of brave academic enquiry, of intellectual wonder and of fiercely independent thinkers. It’s hard to convey the excitement of the learning at City, where ideas in these rooms become almost become bigger than the people in them, where the structures of learning can become an escape from the self and identity. City is a school which never places any artificial division on our formal academic and co-curricular provision, but celebrates the wild adventure and the fun of learning wherever it is found.
