Job overview

Teacher of  Physics (from Easter 2022)

Wetherby Senior School was founded in 2015 and is a member of the Alpha Plus Group of Schools and occupies two sites in Marylebone. There are currently around 420 boys.  Our GCSE results are excellent and we are proud to have continued this trend with our first two sets of A level results. Our students achieved grades that allowed them to gain places at top UK Universities such as; Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Durham and UCL and Universities aboard such as; the University of Chicago, Pompeu Fabra Barcelona and the IE Business School Madrid.

The School was founded to offer a progressive education in the heart of London. The School’s focus on providing an all-round education means that high standards are expected of the boys in all areas of school life. The School provides the boys with a broad educational experience, which includes Philosophy and Thinking Skills in the curriculum, to ensure that they are able to think critically and to problem solve but also to ensure they can be creative and collaborative in their approach, so that they develop a sense of social responsibility and respect for others.

The post represents an exciting opportunity for a teacher with the necessary vision and ambition to help the School offer a first rate academic education for boys.  As a teacher at Wetherby you will have the opportunity to build your experience of working with a team of specialists and to develop the teaching of Physics in interesting and innovative ways, with the support of the Head of Physics.  The post would suit a talented newly qualified teacher or one with a couple of years’ experience looking to develop their career but applications are, of course, also welcome from more experienced.  Teaching staff at Wetherby Senior School have experience of teaching in both the maintained and independent sectors and colleagues looking to move into independent education are warmly encouraged to apply

The Science Department

The Science Department at Wetherby is made up of nine specialists. There are three Science Heads of Department (one of whom is also overall Head of Science), with six further subject specialists and two highly skilled technicians. The Science Department occupies the top floor of our Marylebone Lane site, with ten laboratories and two prep rooms.  Boys are taught by subject specialists in our well-equipped labs, with a strong emphasis on practical work to support the academic challenge of the course. The teachers are innovative and ambitious for the boys.

The Department benefits from interactive boards in all labs, three sets of iPads, as well as a wealth of experimental kit with which the boys learn science in a hands-on and exciting way.

Physics at Wetherby

The Physics Department follows the Exploring Science course for Years 7 and 8 and we start the Edexcel IGCSE Physics course during the first term in Year 9. At A level we follow the AQA A level.

Our aim as a department is to provide exciting and interactive lessons where the boys can learn hands on in the classroom.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Teacher of Physics to join an exciting department. The boys’ performance in public examinations has been strong and A level physics has grown in popularity. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about contributing to the department and preparing the boys to study at leading universities in the UK and abroad. A willingness to play a part in the co-curricular programme and to be a pastoral tutor would be an advantage.

The Alpha Plus Group offers an attractive remuneration package.

Please submit applications through the Alpha Plus Portal.

Applications should reach the school no later than Monday 6th December at 9.00am. Please note that interviews may be held at any stage after applications are received, so candidates are advised to apply as soon as possible. About Wetherby Senior School

Wetherby Senior School is a thriving independent day school for boys aged 11-18 situated in the heart of London. Since opening in 2015 the School has grown and in September 2018 we welcomed our first cohort of Sixth Form pupils following very successful GCSE results. The School combines a rigorous academic education with an emphasis on developing the whole boy by giving him a broad educational experience and strong pastoral care.

We are an academically selective school and the main points of entry are 11+, 13+ and 16+. The School is divided into the Lower School (Years 6 to 9), Middle School (Years 10 to 11) and the Sixth Form with Heads of Section taking responsibility for each age group.

Wetherby Senior is a welcoming and dynamic place to work with a strong sense of community. The school invests in its staff with a programme of continual personal development. We seek to employ highly professional teachers with the ability and commitment to enhance the life of this School and to work effectively and collaboratively with all members of the School community to further develop the School. Our emphasis on educating the whole boy means that all members of staff, in due course, will be expected to contribute to the pastoral care of a group of students as a Form Tutor as well as contributing to the School’s co-curricular activities.
