Job overview

This post requires someone with good pedagogic skills and a strong understanding of Physics.  Experience of teaching A level is desirable, but not essential.

The successful applicant will be joining an experienced, dynamic and welcoming team of teachers in the Mathematical Sciences Department led by the Head of Department, David Robinson. Physics is a well-established subject in the College with a strong track record.  AS and A2 OCR Physics (syllabus A) have been offered for a number of years, meaning there is a bank of existing resources available to support the successful applicant.

The appointee will be expected to use varied and imaginative teaching methods to engage learners and communicate purpose and enthusiasm in the subject. Having a good knowledge base you will need to be clear and systematic in defining conceptual links and applications. Like all our departments, the Physics department is strongly committed to providing individual learners with extra support to help bring out the best in them.

Whilst the successful applicant is likely to be the sole teacher of the subject, Physics is part of the supportive and innovative Mathematical Sciences Department which includes Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Engineering. In creating departments out of clusters of related subjects, the College was concerned to ensure each teacher was part of a substantial team, and able to benefit from sharing practice within the department. This clustering of subjects has worked well with this talented and friendly team of highly capable academics and teaching practitioners.  Should you be successful at interview you will therefore be well supported by a department which strives for excellence and has a welcoming and inclusive culture.  In short, you can look forward to contributing to an excellent team and enjoying the rewards of teaching our learners.

The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
