Job overview

The post and the department

This is an opportunity to join an exceptionally talented and successful department, which currently consists of seven teachers across the three sections of the school.

The OCR specification is used at A level (OCR A) and GCSE (OCR Gateway), and at our International School students study the iGCSE (Edexcel).

Physics is one of the more popular subjects across the school, with a significant uptake of Physics in the Sixth Form (currently over 80 students in years 12 and 13); Physics is a core subject at Key Stage 4 in our Y7-11 section and is the most popular science at IGCSE in the International School.  Results are consistently strong at both GCSE and A level, with 86% gaining A*-B grades at A Level last year and two-thirds gaining grades 9-7 at GCSE. Every year some students go on to study Physics or Engineering related courses at top universities and we run a well-attended Oxbridge/extension program to support this.

Teaching

The successful applicant will be involved in teaching Physics at all levels offered by the school. Teachers are usually asked to teach in two of the three sections of the school (Sixth Form; Years 7-11; The International Section). The deployment of teachers within the Physics department varies from year to year, but this particular post is most likely to involve a significant amount (in excess of half the total timetable) of teaching in the Sixth Form and the remainder in either the International School (iGCSE in years 10 and 11) or Years 7-11.

The person

We are looking for a talented and passionate scientist, able to teach Physics at all levels offered by the school (Years 7-13) and with a strong enough academic profile to be able to teach and stretch the most able sixth formers.

Flexibility of approach, a sense of fun, a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs and an enthusiastic, open approach to teaching are among the qualities we value. d’Overbroeck’s offers teachers and students alike a friendly and welcoming environment where classes are small and standards are high.

We are very happy to receive applications from newly qualified teachers or graduates who hope to enter the profession but don’t have a PGCE. NQTs receive a full induction programme through ISTIP (http://istip.co.uk/) with the support and guidance of senior members of staff. Our recent report from ISTIP generously praised our provision for NQTs.

Other opportunities

While this is primarily a teaching role, there is opportunity for a suitably experienced candidate also to take the role of Director of Studies in the sixth form. This is a personal tutor role, involving overseeing and mentoring a cohort of up to 15 students in years 12 and 13.

While involvement in boarding is not a requirement of the role, there are also opportunities to act as a non-residential tutor in one of the boarding houses (i.e. a weekly evening commitment).

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
