Thank you for your interest in Thomas Gainsborough School.

Thomas Gainsborough School is located in a rural setting on the edge of the Suffolk market town of Sudbury. Close to the beautiful Suffolk countryside yet still within easy reach of London and less than an hour from Cambridge it is a wonderful place to work and learn.

The school, previously an Upper School, welcomed Years 7 and 8 for the first time in 2013. With a thriving Sixth Form the school is larger than average with over 1400 students that has improved significantly over recent years. The school is a rapidly growing and oversubscribed. We are proud to be part of the thriving Unity Schools Partnership Trust and share its aims to support the learning, ambition and aspiration of the young people of West Suffolk.

In September 2015, the school moved into a new building as part of the priority schools building initiative and has taken advantage of the fantastic opportunities that this has provided to enhance the learning experience and environment. We are proudly comprehensive, both in our intake and our approach to providing the very best educational experience possible, captured in our school motto, “Excellence, for each, for all.”

Our fundamental values of, “Respect, Honesty, Happiness, Resilience, Positivity and Confidence” drive our work, through our innovative pathway based curriculum  that seeks to play to the strengths, aptitudes and interests of students when they join the school, through our very strong emphasis on creating the right conditions for learning and through our outstanding pastoral care, where, through a system of vertical tutoring and academic monitoring every child is known as an individual.

The 6th form is increasingly popular, both with our own students and with students joining from other institutions, with numbers more than doubling in the last year.

In 2016, we were in the top 6 of all secondary schools in Suffolk for the progress made by students between the ages of 11 and 16. Furthermore, disadvantaged students, in receipt of the pupil premium, made better progress at Thomas Gainsborough School than all students nationally and we were one of only three schools in Suffolk where disadvantaged students made better progress than all their peers.

Never complacent, we continue to seek opportunities to provide the very best for all our students through curriculum design, professional development and peer to peer support. Please take a look at our website or arrange an informal visit to find out more.
