Teacher of Product Design

September 2019

MPS / UPS

(TLR 2b available for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate)

Governors are seeking to appoint a teacher of Product Design on a permanent contract from September 1st 2019.   This is a teaching post however, for candidates wishing to progress this could be a great opportunity for someone with the right experience to lead Art & Design Technology.  If you are looking for that first rung on the ladder to leadership and you have experience as a successful teacher this could be an excellent opportunity.   The successful candidate must have experience of teaching product design.

Spen Valley High School is very proud to be local comprehensive school with a genuinely inclusive ethos. As part of the Spenborough Cooperative Trust it has a strong relationship with other local schools and good community links.

We believe strongly in ethical leadership and whatever their barrier to learning we aim to support our students so they can remain in school, engaged in their learning and achieving well. We strive to ensure that all of our students can access a curriculum that is appropriate to their needs so that when they leave us they can stand shoulder to shoulder with any young person from any background.

Spen Valley is a successful school, having been judged GOOD by Ofsted in January 2017. However, we are not complacent and all stakeholders are committed to working together to ensure that we continue to provide our students with a full educational experience that enables them to be

This is an exciting time to join Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and develop a truly coherent provision for our students.  You will join our recently appointed Headteacher to work alongside a highly professional & dedicated team of staff who are welcoming, open-minded and supportive. It is a particularly exciting time to join the school as we are undertaking a whole school review of our curriculum to ensure our students will leave us and be able to ’stand shoulder to shoulder’ with any other young person, from any other background.

The successful candidate will be at the forefront of this transformational change and we are looking for someone who is creative, dynamic, and willing to embrace this challenge head on.

We are looking for someone who has a good understanding of the challenges our young people face growing up in today’s world, yet is aspirational for them and will work hard so they can achieve their very best.  Someone who is committed, shows grit and resilience and will work hard for our students. Someone who enjoys working with young people and believes it is a privilege to be a teacher. Someone who can take the initiative but is also a real team player.

Spen Valley High School is a very special school. We believe that our children deserve the very best from their teachers and we want all of our staff to feel the same. If you think we match your vision of what a school should be like we would be delighted to hear from you.

All employees are required to promote and actively support the Council’s responsibilities towards safeguarding.

Our school:

We are an oversubscribed, 11-16 comprehensive school situated in North Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Having been awarded ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted in March 2022, this is a key time for Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and continue to develop a truly coherent and high-quality provision for our students. In this role you will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff, who are welcoming, courageous, open-minded, and supportive.

We are privileged to have been part of the Alex Timpson Programme, and our commitment to becoming a Trauma Informed School was nationally recognised in November 2021, when we were awarded the Attachment Research Community (Secondary) Award.

What makes Spen Valley High School different?

We are proud to be a Trauma Informed School and are looking for someone who fully supports our vision and approach. We know that all young people have been disadvantaged by the Covid pandemic but alongside this, we have a significant number of students in our school with complex backgrounds. These young people not only require, but deserve courageous and resilient teachers who can balance the teaching of their subject to a high standard, with helping their students to navigate their way through the challenges they face. We make no excuses about our approach; but this is not about ‘dumbing down’, far from it, we want colleagues with high expectations but who can manage students through outstanding teaching and developing strong relationships. We require someone with good emotional intelligence and who will show warmth, compassion and empathy to all our students.

We pride ourselves on being ethical leaders, and leading with integrity. When joining Spen Valley you are entering an environment that balances professional challenge with support and kindness. We expect our colleagues to work hard, and go the ‘extra mile’ for our students, but in doing so we recognise that additional support is sometimes necessary and our Trauma Informed and relational approach extends to the way we work with our staff. We offer a wide range of CPD opportunities, including a bespoke CPD package that genuinely meets the needs of each colleague. As a member of the Red Kite Teaching Alliance, we receive high-quality support, advice and training and work closely with colleagues from some of the most successful schools in Yorkshire. We encourage our staff not only in their involvement in various activities throughout the school, but also to be proactive and develop new and fresh ideas to engage and enthuse both our staff and students.
