Job overview

Teachers of Psychology, Sociology and Media Studies

We are seeking to make two appointments of teachers of Sociology, Psychology and possibly Media Studies, who will teach one or more of these subjects at A Level in the Sixth Form. The advertised posts are full-time, but the School is willing to consider those seeking a part-time position.

The Posts and the Departments

This is an opportunity to join highly successful Social Science departments within the School. The new appointments are being made to accommodate the rapid growth in numbers of students opting to take these subjects, which is in no small part due to the excellent results obtained at A Level.

Psychology

There has been significant increase in uptake of Psychology in recent years, currently reaching 60 students with further expansion expected in 2018. The Psychology department is academically ambitious and this is reflected with over 70% of students achieving A* or A grades and 95% achieving A*-B in 2017, as well as exceptional value added.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the planning, teaching and assessment within Psychology which follows the AQA specification. They will work alongside the Head of Psychology, Kelly Bristow, and one other teaching colleague. The optional units that the department currently offers are: Schizophrenia, Relationships and Forensic Psychology.

Sociology

We have also seen a rapid increase in uptake of Sociology, currently reaching 58 students, with further growth expected in 2018. The Sociology department is academically ambitious and this is reflected with over 60% of students achieving A* or A grades and 100% achieving A*-B in 2017, as well as exceptional value added.

The units that the department currently offers are: Culture and Identity, Education, Theory and Methods, The Media and Crime and Deviance.

Both Sociology and Psychology are extremely active departments and aim to engage students outside of the classroom as much as possible with trips, guest speakers, and additional activities such as designing and selling psychologically informed alternative Valentine’s cards for charity! Students are encouraged to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and as departments we support and encourage this programme.

Media Studies

For many years d’Overbroeck’s has been one of the leading centres offering Communication and Culture A Level and has an outstanding record of success (100% of candidates achieved A* or A in 2017). We are now offering the new AQA Media Studies A Level and are seeing increasing numbers of students opting for the subject. Although we are primarily seeking Sociology and Psychology specialists, the ability to assist with Media Studies teaching as well would be advantageous.

Person Specification

We are looking for highly qualified, talented and ambitious teachers of Psychology, Sociology and Media Studies who will join the departments at an exciting time. We place a high degree of importance on strong academic skills and subject knowledge, as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability range. We embrace a flexible approach to teaching. A sense of fun, a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs and an open approach to teaching are qualities that we prize highly, along with a genuine commitment to working in an exceptional school environment. d’Overbroeck’s offers teachers and students alike a friendly and welcoming environment where classes are small and standards and expectations are high.

We are very happy to receive applications from newly qualified teachers or graduates who hope to enter the profession but don’t have a PGCE. NQTs receive a full induction programme through ISTIP (http://istip.co.uk/) with the support and guidance of senior members of staff. Graduates who have not completed a PGCE receive an extensive in-house training programme. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer support and training to NQTs and recent graduates.

 Salary

The school has its own salary scale (above the national scale) and pension scheme. There are additional responsibility awards for senior Sixth Form pastoral responsibilities.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
