Job overview

We are looking for an inspirational teacher of Religious Studies to join our successful Department.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher in his / her own right or, if a newly qualified teacher, the potential to be outstanding.  He / she will be able to teach Religious Studies at all key stages.

He / she will have strong interpersonal skills, and the drive to ensure that Religious Studies delivers the best experience (and results) of any school in the County, or indeed nationally. Strong organisational skills are also essential.

Religious Studies is highly valued by many students at Wycombe High School. In the Sixth Form it is frequently chosen by students who want to continue to engage with the big questions, or who judge that it will be a useful adjunct to their preparations for studying Medicine or Law. We provide a number of opportunities for students to further their learning outside the classroom. We organise day visits to local places of worship such as the Hindu temple at Neasden and arrange entries to national competitions such as NATRE’s Spirited Arts Competition.

Our students are fully involved in lessons, make rapid progress and show flair and confidence. They do very well in their exams. UMS scores of 95% or above are frequent.

The successful applicant will be joining a team with three other members, who will have a strong and shared commitment to supporting each other and to continuous improvement.

Team members contribute to developing new, exciting and stimulating resources to keep up-to-date with subject developments.

If you would like to find out more about this position or the Religious Studies Department, we would be delighted to answer any questions that you might have.

Wycombe High School is a girls’ selective state academy school with 1350 students on roll, of whom over 400 are in the Sixth Form. Each year 192 girls are admitted into Year 7. All students are assigned to a vertical tutor group consisting of about 21 students; usually three students from each year. There are six houses with 10 tutor groups in each house.

The school has educated girls of High Wycombe for over a hundred years and is very highly regarded in the local and wider community. There is a strong and shared sense of community and collective pride, built on core values. We have excellent links with other local schools, colleges and universities.

Examination results at Wycombe High School are outstanding. An impressive 44% of all A Level grades in 2016 were A* or A grades. The whole school A* rate was 14%. The significant majority of our students gained their first choice university place – an exceptional achievement given this year’s competitive climate. Our results at GCSE are equally outstanding, with 89% of all grades A*-B and 33% of all grades were A*.

Our school is part of the Wycombe High School Academies Trust; a Trust consisting of Wycombe High School and Bourne End Academy.

Our staff are professional, forward-looking and committed to extending the horizons of our students, encouraging them to aim high, to take on leadership roles and to become independent learners. We have an ambitious development plan, with a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning, both within and beyond the classroom.

We are a National Support School, a Teaching School and a Mathematics Hub and have strong community partnerships. We have invested substantially in IT systems and training. We have an outstanding reputation for the performing and visual arts.

Visits prior to interview are welcomed.

At Wycombe High School we

  • Look beyond the traditional grammar school.
  • Look beyond league tables and exam results.
  • Look beyond stereotypes and conventions.
  • Look beyond a world where futures are fixed.

At Wycombe High, we look beyond.

All those who study, work or send their children to our school are part of the Wycombe High School Family and are ambassadors for our vision, mission, values and Wycombe High School characteristics.

Vision:

Wycombe High School is a school where students relish challenge, chase excellence and inspire those around them at every stage of their lives

Mission:

We build an ambitious and compassionate community of people who contribute eagerly to school life. We provide opportunities which propel our students out of their comfort zone, whilst supporting them at every stage and guiding them towards diverse futures

Values:

  • Infectious Joy:

School days should be “the best days of your life”. We create a joyful environment where each girl can experience the thrill of success, seek opportunities that make her smile and develop long-lasting friendships.

  • Limitless Ambition:

We reject the notion that there is anything in the world that a girl ‘cannot’ do or ‘should not’ strive for. We galvanize every girl to be boldly brilliant in whatever she wishes to achieve, pushing her limits without fearing failure.

  • Insatiable Curiosity

For us, learning is a process which extends beyond your time at school; it’s a lifelong passion. We aim to uncover an innate intrigue and thirst for discovery in our girls, whatever their chosen subject(s) might be. We prepare our girls to think big and think globally.

  • Generous Spirit

We champion a collective and collaborative spirit. We provide an unbreakable support network, sharing in our girls’ successes and enabling them to bounce back from times of difficulty.

Qualities

Our Motto Fortiter, Fideliter, Feliciter highlights the characteristics of a Wycombe High School student.

  • Fortiter: Courageously

Each student is encouraged to speak out against all injustice, supported to take risks, and not be afraid of failure. She will push herself to her personal limits and beyond; and never give up. She will be encouraged to listen to the opinions of others, as well as to give them. She will accept responsibility for herself and other students. She will become independent and innovative in thought and action.

  • Fideliter: Faithfully

Every student is expected to uphold our school vision, mission, values and be a great ambassador for the Wycombe High Family. She will act with integrity and be truthful and honest in all she does. She will keep promises and be reliable. She will work hard to achieve her full potential. Above all she will be a good friend, a good neighbour and a good citizen. She will contribute positively to school life and society.

  • Feliciter: Joyfully

Every student will contribute to making our school the happy and joyful place it is. She will demonstrate mutual respect and empathy for all; is proud of her own achievements and those of others. She shows commitment to a fair and peaceful community and embraces diversity and a global mindset. She will be positive in approach; and support others to do the same.

"There is a clear commitment to the development of the whole child and the school provides outstanding opportunities for the students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. A significant strength of the the school is the high quality of pastoral care".
