Job overview

Part Time Teacher of Science – Chemistry or Biology Specialism

Required for September 2021

Owing to increased student numbers, The Langton is seeking to expand its Science Department and appoint a well-qualified Teacher of Science, with the ability to teach general science at KS3 level and either biology or chemistry to GCSE and A-level.

Science is a popular subject at the school with approximately 400 places taken up in the three A-level science subjects across years 12 and 13 of our mixed sixth form. All of our boys in KS4 study separate sciences as part of their triple award AQA GCSE qualification and we teach a bespoke combined science course at KS3 in Years 7 and 8. The successful candidate will be rewarded by working in a department where the emphasis is placed firmly on teaching and all lessons take place in dedicated laboratories with support from full time technicians. In short, we look to free our teachers so they can teach the very best lessons in their own style while working under the guidance of a head of subject and the Director of Science.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and passionate subject specialist capable both of delivering the curriculum and of working with a team of scientists involved in cutting edge student centred projects.  We have a dedicated research session on our timetable where students work with technology from CERN, work on genetic engineering with staff from the University of Kent and learn novel chemical techniques as part of the Chemistry Society. Students from the school often choose scientific research as the subject of their Extended Project Qualification, take part in Olympiads and even publish journal articles. This is an opportunity to work in a high profile department giving you the freedom to conduct genuine scientific research in an area of your own interest.

We welcome applications from experienced colleagues and NQTs, as we have the scope to tailor the role to all experience levels. For further details of the school, please visit the school’s website www.thelangton.org.uk

If you require further information, please email Mrs Sue Rollinson, HR Officer, (srollinson@thelangton.kent.sch.uk).  Please use the Kent-teach application form to apply.  CVs only will not be accepted.

Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  Successful applicants will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.

Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys is a boys-only, selective, grammar, non-denominational secondary school with mixed sixth form situated in Canterbury, Kent.   It is a larger than average secondary school with around 1,100 students currently on roll.

The Langton, as it is often known, was established as a school in 1881, and has a strong sense of its own history;  the four school houses Burgess, Hardman, Mackenzie and Sharp are named after four of its pupils who died fighting in World War I.
