Job overview

The Science department is one of the largest at Kingsmead School consisting of over 16 members of teaching and support staff. The department is led by the Learning Director of Science, three co-ordinators - one for each specialism of Science, as well as supported by a lead practitioner and our team of science technicians.

We aim to teach students the scientific concepts that underpins how and why thing work so they can appreciate the world around them. At KS3, we aim to provide a foundation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well build practical skills, whilst also making sure that students are fluent in the language of Science, through embedding literacy skills within the curriculum. We want to ensure all students have a firm understanding of all the key concepts that they will need as they progress from KS3 to KS5. In year 9, students start their GCSE journey, following the Edexcel Combined Science or Edexcel single science curriculum. Both pathways provide students the opportunity to refine key transferable skills such as understanding abstract concepts, logical thinking, application of mathematical skills and practical skills, which they use and develop further at A-level. A-level Sciences are quite a popular choice amongst students at Kingsmead with many of our students progressing into various scientific careers ranging from medicine to chemical engineering to architecture.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Has a good standard of Literacy and Numeracy
  • Has good attention to detail

About Kingsmead School & Sixth Form

‘Practise to Perfect’

Kingsmead is a large, mixed, oversubscribed school – easily accessible from both central London and surrounds – with loyal staff, an established standing in the community and a very strong track record. We are consistently above average in Progress 8 and A Level value added, with high Ebacc entry and a wide range of options at KS4 and KS5. Those outcomes are built on a calm, purposeful and collaborative atmosphere.

Despite the school’s size and standing, the Headteacher was appointed relatively young after experience of leading for a high-performing academy chain and in one of the most successful London boroughs. He has restarted the school culture and approach over the last few years and is determined to push it forward from being in the top 20% nationally to being somewhere where things are achieved others do not think possible.

Ofsted

“Students, including those with special educational needs, make good progress and achieve well in their learning because effective action is taken to address any underachievement. Teaching is good. Lessons include a range of interesting activities, encouraging students to work both individually and in groups. Questioning and regular reviews of learning ensure that students make good progress. Students behave well, attend regularly and are ready and eager to learn.”
