Job overview

Due to the growing popularity of the academy and a rapid growth in student numbers, we are seeking to appoint a committed and dynamic teacher of Science to join our team. We are able to consider any specialism.

We are a successful 11-19 stand-alone academy where our school community benefits from excellent facilities in our modern and purpose-built school. We are looking for candidates who share our commitment and determination to providing a learning environment that enables all young people to thrive. This post could suit an ECT as well as a more experienced applicant.

Our most recent OFSTED inspection (May 2018) saw the academy judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features.

We offer extensive professional development opportunities with a structured path to enable progression at every stage of your career. This includes leadership training, secondments at other schools, coaching and mentoring. We also support our staff undertaking NPQ’s. We are proud to be a “Brilliant School” and have recently been awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools.

The successful candidate will join a hardworking, forward thinking and supportive department. Whilst we are currently seeing a growing uptake in all three sciences at A-Level we also have strong links with the local Primary Schools which brings the opportunity to be involved in our Primary Science Events. We have a strong focus on STEM within the school and a passion across these areas would be an advantage. Leadership projects or Recruitment and Retention allowances could be available for the right candidate.

This is an exciting time to join the Academy with a number of significant changes planned for the near future that will support our move towards excellence. With the expansion of our T-Level offering we look forward to breaking ground on our anticipated state of the art building following investment from the Department of Education. The Academy also has an off-site alternate provision centre at the beautiful Idle Valley Nature reserve which could provide the successful candidate with an exciting opportunity to be involved in something a little bit different.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • embrace our ethos and passion for our 3 R’s of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.
  • be excited about teaching Science and committed to achieving excellent results for their students.
  • demonstrate high levels of ambition and optimism regarding what the academy and every single student can achieve.
  • have the resolve to make a real difference to the lives of pupils, be that as Form Tutor, through extra-curricular activities or leading an enrichment session on a more unique topic which ignites your passion.

Full Time or Flexible Working Options available

The Academy is committed to equality of experience for all staff and students. We operate safer recruitment, robust child protection procedures and require evidence of DBS clearance for all employees. Checks will also be made with previous employers. Please read our Information for Candidates for additional information.

The Elizabethan Academy is a very successful 11-18 school located in Retford in North Nottinghamshire.  This area is a most attractive rural location with a good range of housing.  Retford is a chartered market town with a population of some 25,000 inhabitants in an attractive rural setting.  The town is close to the A1 and the M1.  Sheffield, Lincoln, Doncaster and the Peak District can all be reached within the hour.  Leeds,  Nottingham and the Yorkshire Dales take just over an hour.

The Academy is very popular within the local community and has currently 1,200 students.  It draws students from 9 “family” feeder schools in the town and surrounding villages but through parental choice we take in from over 30 primary schools.  In 2011 the school was graded “Good” by OFSTED.  We converted to a stand-alone Academy on 1 April 2012.

In April 2007, we moved into brand new purpose-built accommodation as part of a PFI project for 6 schools in Bassetlaw. Year 7 to 13 are housed together in purpose-built accommodation, organised into Faculty areas. Facilities for Science, Technology, the Expressive Arts and Sport are excellent. We were excited to have officially opened our 9-metre-high climbing wall in 2021! Thanks to funding from Sport England, the wall is available for use of all students as well being available to hire, offering an exciting new sport to local Bassetlaw people.

We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities to enrich the curriculum for our students.  We have excellent links with the business community and are well supported by local companies and community groups.

Our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience (3R’S) reflect our ethos. Respect is one of the cornerstones of the Elizabethan: respect for others’ beliefs and respect for others’ differences. Just as critical, however, is self-respect and self-discipline. Students are expected and taught to take responsibility for their actions and their learning.

Our students must also be effective team players and independent learners.

Building student resilience is vital to support student mental health and well-being. They need confidence, courage, and self-belief to show strength of character when things aren’t successful, preparing them for  society.

The Academy’s ethos is evident at every level of the organisation : staff, students, parents and governors are committed to valuing each person as a unique individual. We believe that every child can be successful and that the role of adults is to give them the confidence that anything is possible.

As a learning community, we value the contribution that everyone makes to maintaining high quality in teaching and learning.  Therefore, all staff who join our Academy can expect a thorough and supportive induction programme when they join us, and will be expected to develop both professionally and personally.

“Relationships between teachers and pupils are very positive." "Considerable emphasis is placed on pupils’ personal development and wellbeing." "The school is welcoming, caring and inclusive." "Teachers have strong subject knowledge." "Pupils benefit from a wide range of enriching activities." "Pupils in all year groups in a range of subjects are making good progress." "Behaviour is good.” (Ofsted 2018)
