Job overview

The Governors of Reading School are seeking to appoint a passionate Science Teacher to join one of the best state schools in the country and inspire our outstanding students. This post has arisen due to sustained increase in demand for Physics and Chemistry.

We would welcome applications from well-qualified, enthusiastic Science graduates or experienced teachers who are ready to work with exceptionally motivated and able students. Our three flourishing science departments each benefit from specialist technicians and a full team of dynamic subject experts, whose commitment, expertise and professionalism are a source of great pride across the school.

With triple science taught to all GCSE candidates and over 300 A Level students, this role would suit a teacher with a passion for their subject and the ability to teach up to A Level. We would happily consider applicants with expertise in Physics, Chemistry or Biology; most of our science staff only teach their first subject though some capacity to teach a second science may be beneficial. Science recently benefitted from the completion of a new £3.6 million teaching block, and most lessons are taught in one of 12 laboratories. Each science is highly valued by the whole school community, with dozens of students participating in STEM club activities, around 50% of each sixth from cohort undertaking Science related work-experience and a similar number attending top Universities to study Science.

Our School is a remarkably successful 11-18 selective boys’ school with a reputation for high standards of behaviour and achievement. Our mission is to develop academic excellence and to build good men, and we consider the values of excellence, integrity, leadership and community to be integral to our success and to our future. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students and expects all staff to share this commitment.

For further details of the post please contact the Deputy Headmaster, Dr Chris Evans by email cevans@reading-school.co.uk or on 0118 901 5600. Or please visit our website.

Closing date: 5pm, Monday 20 May 2019.

Interview date: Thursday 23 May 2019.

Reading School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to a DBS check.

Reading School is an amazing place to study and work. Our School was founded in 1125 and, through its 900-year history, we have provided world-leading education to tens of thousands of students. With this rich heritage and depth of tradition, it should be no surprise that our academic reputation is second to none. Our Year 13 students are consistently awarded A* to B grades in more than 90% of their A-Level entries, and those sitting GCSEs regularly achieve the very top grades in more than 85% of their courses.

This is not what matters to us most though. We consider these outcomes a necessary, but insufficient measure of a student's education. Education is much more than grades, and learning is much more than retaining information. Education is the business of hope. It sustains society, nurtures culture, inspires innovation and enables the best in humanity.

Education matters, because people matter.

At Reading School, in all we do, we therefore seek to nurture curiosity, inspire service and build character. We promote honesty and community as well as excellence and leadership. We encourage our students to find resilience at the bottom of the ruck, humility on the podium, delight when encountering difference, patience when practice is tough and integrity when no-one is watching.

As a school of character, we believe that your actions can and will make a difference to you and others. We are a values-based organisation that focuses on growth and development. Our core values underpin everything that we do and our staff, both teaching and associate, role model these values.

If you are thinking about joining our team you can find out why it might be the right fit for you. Our team is proud to make a positive impact and strives to put values in to action – excellence, integrity, leadership and community.
